Audio Issue

Post by jimboy »

I'm in the process of creating a project and learning the software at the same time. I just created a DVD and while playing it back in my DVD player (with digital audio out to a home theater audio system) I noticed I don't have any dolby digital audio from the disk. There was audio from the standard analog line output from the DVD player to the tv however.

My final burn settings were as follows...

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

I assume if I select Dolby Digital it should get on the disk?

I captured HDV video/audio clips (no editing required).
Went directly to Create Disk and added the clips to the disk project.
Created a menu and selected the above settings.

Later I checked the project settings (I know they should all match) and found that audio was set to LCPM. Was this my problem? (I didn't have time tonight to re-render for another 3 hours)
Is this why my disk doesn't have Dolby Digital on it?
Why don't the final burn settings take precedence?

I'm spending more time dinking with settings and testing than actually doing any real work.

You don't say which version of VS you are using. However, if your project settings were for LPCM audio (high quality but large files), then the burning module cogwheel Options icon in the bottom left of screen will have 'Do not convert compliant MPEG files' checked as a default in VS10. This means if the video you produced in the editing stage was fully DVD compliant, (and LPCM is the rock standard audio for DVD compliance), then with that checkbox ticked in the Options icon, the properties of your edited video take precedence over the burn properties you have selected.

Be careful, though. If you uncheck that box, then the program will have to re-encode at least the audio during the burning phase. This normally should not cause any problem, though we still don't recommend it. If you mean to have Dolby on your final DVD, then you should be producing a DVD-compliant mpeg-2 after the editing stage which uses Dolby (Share > Create Video File > DVD, making sure the audio is set to Dolby). Then when you open the burning module, you will already have a file to insert with Dolby audio ready to burn.

Version is VS10 +

Since my HDV captured files don't require any editing and I was having the "cogwheel create disk settings" re-render the video to DVD-NTSC. Why doesn't it re-render the audio into Dolby Digital if I have it selected?

Using "Share" to create another video file before using "Share" again to create a disk seems like a waste of time. Using "Create Disk" seems to do the same thing by creating temp files before it makes the burned image but the settings in "Create Disk" doesn't seem to matter.

Seems kinda senseless if you have settings available "in the final phase in creating a DVD" that don't do anything or end up screwing up your final project.

Sounds like a software bug to me.

P.S. 'Do not convert compliant MPEG files' This was checked. However the files were HDV files being converted to NTSC-DVD. Are HDV files considered compliant MPEG files for DVD? Some sort of conversion would need to happen. It just doesn't pay attention to the audio settings.
