Need a DVD duplicator? Build one!

Post by Terry Stetler »

Prevously I used a computer with 4 DVD burners & Nero multi-burner to make multiple copies, but no more. A simpler solution is now in the same server case.

My newly redone 'burning box' now has 6 Lite-On DVD-everything burners connected to a Copystars 16x 1 to 11 target duplicator controller board. It has a 128mb buffer and no PC needed in the box :)

Just make your master, put it in the duplicator boxes reader drive and use the duplicators LCD menu to set it up. Press 'Start' and go to lunch. It also controls a HDD for storing disc image files.

Putting it together was very easy; just mount the drives & Copystars box, plug all the drive cables into the Copystars box, connect the power cables to the power supply (a few splitters help here) & close her up.

I used Lite-On Model SHM-165H6S OEM DVD +/- R/RAM burners ($30.99 @ Newegg.com);

and a 160g Maxtor IDE drive ($54.99 @ Newegg.com);

and the cheap server case. Think I paid <$40 for it 3-4 years ago at a computer show. I figure <$475 for the whole shebang; even less if you have the case, HDD and a burner or two laying around.
