Idea needed to record movie sequences from a PC window

Post by dr.onestone »

Hello,

I want to start any PC program (e.g. GOOGLE EARTH), play or perform some tasks with that PC program (e.g. zoom the world to my home) and want to record that movie sequence so that I can implement it in a movie with Ulead VideoStudio 10.

2 ways of doing that seems to be possible:

1.) Does anybody now a software, which records everything in parallel on a PC disk (e.g. as an AVI-file) which occurs in a PC window?

2.) My notebook is equipped with the graphic card "NVIDIA Geforce Go 6600". This graphic card can be used in a "dual-display" mode, which means, as far as I know, that a selected window can be displayed on a secondary video output port (RGB, S-Video or DVI-I connections are available). Thus, it should be possible to connect one of these video output ports with my camcorder which then should be able to record the content of that window. Has somebody got already experiences in doing that?

Or - has anybody another ideas to perform the task decribed above?

Much regards

Can't help with (2), but as for (1), you might take a look at the FRAPS program. Do a Google search for it.

FRAPS is listed in our links to free stuff

Alternatively Camtasia Studio but this one isn't free.

I'll add a 3rd option, that a member had posted about. I appologize to the author for not remembering the name. The member was preparing video tutorials.

What they done was simply set up the camcorder, pointed it at their computer monitor, of course having it zoomed so only the sreen was being recorded. Then start recording, while you go about doing what you want on the computer.

Since I read about that, I've wanted to try it, but didn't have any spare tape for my camcorder. However I just aquired some, so I think I'll try doing a tutorial this way, and may even re-install Google Earth and try that. Last time I checked they finally had a satellite image of my home...

Of course if its simply Google Earth that you wish to record then the correct way to do so is this.

Fine if you have Google Earth Pro, which costs US$400. I don't think the movie thing works with either the free version or GE Plus...

I think thats one of the lures to get you to purchase a copy rather than the free one.

Apparantly the bought ones are used by TV companies and the like.
for us mere mortals its a case of using FRAPS or Camtasia Studio or similar.
Thought I would mention though there is a module for creating video files but yes you have to buy it, and it's not cheap.

Thanks a lot for your information.

In the first run I will try to play around with the FRAPS program.
If somebody is interested with my experience I will post some lines in the forum after I have got experience.

Special thanks to Steve J (sjj1805) who referenced me to the following chapter of this Ulead's User Forum:
Product Forums
General Discussion
Product Tutorials
---> Ulead Products General Information
where you can find the subject
---> Free Stuff for use with Ulead Products

The listing contains many, many free software which should be browsed by anybody who wants to get out more of video and audio editing, etc.

Thanks once more for all of your hints
