movie factory5 won't supress data to fit dvd

Post by greenstreak »

Why won't movie factory 5 supress movie quality so it will fit on a dvd? I tried to burn 4 episodes of Coach but only 3 would burn since it was over the dvd limit. I used Nero and that program asked me if I wanted to supress the quality to be able to burn on 1 dvd. I said yes and Nero burned all 4 episodes without a problem. The quality was still good.

It's a question of bitrate. (Lower bitrate = longer playing = lower quality.)

Here's a Bitrate Calculator. If you are using LPCM audio (uncompressed) this will eat up lots space that can otherwise be used for video.

I'm not sure what the minimum bitrate or maximum playtime is with Movie Factory. I try to keep it down to 90 minutes (with Dolby audio) for good quality on a single layer DVD.

Thanks for the information. The problem I find is MF 5 doesn't even give the option to be able to cut quality a little to be able to store more on the dvd. I guess Nero Express people had enough sense to incorporate that feature in their software. I have a movie saved that is 3 hours long. Do you know how I can save it on 2 dvds with mf 5?

thanks

Art, you have to do a bit more work in MF5 but it does give you the scope to trade off quality against size:

In 'Project Settings', click the 'Change MPEG Settings' button. Select 'Customise' and click the 'Compression' tab. Using DVDDoug's Bitrate Calculator, enter a 'Video data rate' figure that will enable you to fit your 4 episodes on a single DVD (check the disk space consumed on the bar graph at the bottom of the screen).

(BTW, take a moment to fill in your system details in your profile to help us to help you better.)

Good luck!

Hi velojet

I appreiate your help. I did fill out my system info also. I went to the project settings. In the compression section there is nothing about video bitrate. Only audio settings. I changed from 256 to 224 and the movie copied to disk. I am really new at this. I am saving tv programs and movies. I want to copy them to dvd and take them with me on my boat since I can get only 3 stations while on the water.

Thanks

Check again, Art. Unless you've got a corrupted copy of MF5, above the 'Audio Settings' box, you'll see a 'Video Settings' box, with a 'Video data rate' entry field.

(Thanks for your system details.)

Are you both looking at the same version of MF5? I'm not at my video machine now and, hence, can't check what the situation is. Plain MF5 is a DVD authoring program in essence, MF5 Plus is the one you should use in comparison to NERO.

Well, mine's the plain vanilla MF5 (Build 5.0.0189.1) and it definitely has a 'Video Settings' box for changing the bitrate, with all the video output configurability I need.

Ahh but it does!

The 'Fit & Burn' also exists in DVD MovieFactory 5 (Standard) and also
DVD Movie Factory 5 Plus.

If your video is too large to fit onto the DVD and you select the burn option

You will be presented with a dialog box.

Well! Thanks, Steve, you're a mine of information - there's nothing about this in the manual, and I've never dared to try to click 'Burn', with all the warning red text and bar staring you in the face.

So what exactly does MF5 do when it tries "to Fit DVD'? Chop back on video quality? or audio quality? or both simultaneously?

I have MF5 Plus. I don't get the box sjj1805 refers to when the data won't fit after I add files to be burned and I have added to many when I get to the next screen that shows the title and name of the programs the last one added is missing. So when I get to the last screen to burn the warning box does not come up. Also, I found the video adjustment in the compression section, but mine does not show the rate the calulator shows. In that section it is at default 90 for quality.

Is there a way to burn a 3 or 4 hr movie onto 2 dvds?

thanks guys for your help.

The 'Video Settings' box is just below that - type the rate the calculator shows into the 'Video data rate' entry field:
