How can I stop video playback edge distortion

Post by kilvroch »

I have been capturing video off my Sony DCR-PC100e for quite some time.
Today I am noticing a problem, especially with movement - (and isn't that why we take videos in the first place?)

I am getting very annoying pixilated effect down the right hand side as I play back video into my capture software (ULEAD V10+ OR WMM)

what is causing this and how can I get rid of it?

more explanation - the distortion is there when I play the video back on my camera - even not connected to any external device.

So I believe the problem is with my camera or the tape... what I want to know is : can I clean away this distortion?

This could be a worn or dirty tape. It can also be caused by a hardware problem. Try a tape head cleaner first otherwise you may need to get the camcorder serviced.

In the meantime, to deal with the existing video(s) you can use the crop filter to cut away the affected edge.

Bear in mind the TV Safe area so if your going to play this back on a TV you will lose the edges of the video anyway.

The answers are:

Yes, the problem is with your camera or the tape :?

Yes, you can clean it up by cropping. I would run some test burns first to determine how much I need to crop, some of it will disappear in the overscan area.

Did you ever clean your camcorders heads? Run a cleaning tape through it and also check with another tape if the problem persists.

bad news! I bought a cleaning tape, put it in and my camcorder choked - the tape was tangled in it.

I delicately fished it out and put in one of my tapes - it tried to eat one my important tapes.... something is now out of whack in the camera innards.

NOT GOOD AT ALL.

Is it possible to rewind a crumpled tape? About three inches are loose out the front of my cassette.... I REALLY do not want to lose this video.

Whilst you can rewind the tape by hand you need to get the camcorder fixed before it chews anymore of this tape or any others up. You will also ned to try and avoid the crumpled up section. A bit of splicing may be required.
