VS9 MPEG4 "The codec cannot be found"

Post by newyorkcityboy »

Hi all,

I have VideoStudio 9 with the MPEG4 plugin and patch both installed. When I try to render video in the MPEG4 format, once I click to save, it says "The codec cannot be found."

The options are all available to select MPEG4, it's just that I can't actually render a video with this codec.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Thanks.

It almost sounds like the codec has become corrupted or broken. You could download the free app Sherlock, Codec Detective. It determines the codecs installed and checks to see if any are broken.

Then you did by chance when you obtained the MPEG4 Plug-in for VS9, save it somewhere on your system? If not you could try to download it again here:
MPEG4/HD Plug-ins for VS9. I done a search on the forums and found where the link had been posted by Lance Carr when it was originally released.

Hi vidoman,

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I don't still have the plugin executable and I can't get that webpage you linked to open on my computer. The Ulead website drives me crazy; half the pages don't seem to open and it's riddled with broken links.

How big is the MPEG4 plugin executable? Does someone have it and could they email it to me? It would be much appreciated. My email is newyorkcityboy26@hotmail.com .

Or if anyone has any other ideas on what's causing this problem....?

I'm going to try the free program you mentioned. I'll report back on the results.

Thanks.

Ok, I ran Sherlock. I'm not sure where it would say if there were any broken codecs, but I don't see any indication that there are. And there are several MPEG4 codecs listed. I've reprinted them below:

If Sherlock detects any broken or improperly registered (or unregistered) codecs, it starts off with a separate message screen listing those particular codecs. Then in its main page, the broken etc codecs are shown in red.

Can I assume that the list of codecs you give are only the mpeg-4 ones and that Sherlock in fact showed other types of codec?

Anyway, regardless of that, I note that all of them are fundamentally Microsoft mpeg-4 codecs (with one derived from Corona). I too have a longish list of Microsoft mpeg-4 codecs, but the important difference is that apart from DivX and XVid (which are another kind of mpeg-4 codec), I also have two InterVideo mpeg-4 codecs listed (loaded with VS10+). I had never downloaded the VS9 mpeg-4 codec, but suspect it would have been labelled either InterVideo or Ulead. So if you don't have one of those, then something has gone wrong with your loading of it or it has somehow been uninstalled if Sherlock could not even detect it...

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, Sherlock did list many other video codecs. However, there were no Intervideo MPEG4 codecs listed, and the only Ulead codec listed was "Ulead DVD video decoder 2." So something seems to have gone wrong. I'm not sure what to do, as I no longer have the VS9 MPEG4 plugin installer and can't seem to get it off their website.

If anyone has it, please email it to me at newyorkcityboy26@hotmail.com .

Do you think that, if I could find and install Intervideo's MPEG4 codec, it would solve my problem?

Thanks.

Well, I can't guarantee it. But it certainly works in VS10+ for exactly the purpose it was originally designed to do in VS9.

(FYI, in case you did not know, Ulead was bought out by InterVideo, and has in turn been taken over recently by Corel. That explains why recent Ulead products use InterVideo codecs...)
