I'm using the trial VS10, and creating mpeg (VCD) files. After doing that with a simple movie file, I noticed that -on other PC's- the file does not play because there is a MPEG I/II Splitter required filter, that is missing in these systems. But, of course, an MPG (or VCD or SVCD) file must run also on systems that do not have ulead software installed.
I tried again using the sample -bundled- avi file in the library and saving it in mpeg format, but getting the same result. Therefore, should be a matter of settings. Can any one suggest me the correct setting to create mpeg files requiring only the standard (windows) filters and codecs?
Thanks.
VS10 and MPEG splitter

I don't know what that is.......the file does not play because there is a MPEG I/II Splitter required filter...
I believe that Windows Media Player does not come with an MPEG-2 decoder (SVCD & DVD), but it might come with an MPEG-1 decoder (VCD).
Probably the safest thing to do is to burn a WMV file onto a disc, because any PC with Windows Media Player should be able to play WMV files.

As far as I was aware, the mpeg-1 codec used by Video Studio (and any other video editing program which can deal with that format) is installed as part of Windows XP, and certainly not by Ulead or InterVideo. I have just had a look at the codecs on my computer using GSpot and, like Doug, can find no reference to an mpegI/II splitter. (Also nothing in Control Panel > System > Harware > Device Manager, though the list of video codecs there is far less comprehensive). FWIW, the mpeg-1 codec is contained in the vanilla 'quartz.dll' file installed as part of XP.

Apply SP1
I happen to use the Japanese version of VS10, and had the same problems with MPEG1 files not playing on other's PCs. Interestingly enough, after looking at the Japanese site under "updates" it clearly says that VS10 service pack 1 (Japanese) addresses this issue. I don't see this explanation for the English version of the update, but it seems hard to believe that this portion of a "fix" would be different because it is not language-related.
I would certainly give SP1 a try if you haven't already.
Note that what I was doing until I found this is to download a "MEGA" codec pack (see link below) and install that on the PC needing playback. This is not necessarily recommended as I have noticed some weird things happening when there are "competing" codecs etc. but might help you in the future.
