PI 12 forgets my preferences

After another day of trying to work with PI-12, the problem keeps coming up.
I make textures for in games, like for buildings, people, clothes everything you can think of.

Now I have to test these inside a program, to see how the changes apear.
This program runs in 800x600 resolution, this gave me an idea.
I set all the settings in preferences, exited the PI-12 and then loaded it again.
The settings were ok, then again I exit PI-12, but before I restarted it,
I changed the resolution of XP desktop from 1024x768 to 800x600 and back.
Then restarted PI-12 and the settings in preferences were reset again.

Maybe someone can do the same and see if this will reset thier settings in preferences also ?

I tried to reproduce the problem, and could not. PI did not change my settings in preferences. It also remember the last document size, etc...

Just to keep developers know it: settings still diappear from preferences. Maybe they should take a look at it.

Thank you for trying it out vidoman.
So far I have no clue what causes the settings to reset.
Maybe the trial version I tested before the retail version, has something to do with it, but thats just a guess.

Have now removed all software from Ulead.
Cleaned up the registry and removed everything in there related to Uleads software.
Cleaned up all Ulead files from my hard disk.
Made sure my entire system is now clean of any previous Ulead installations.

Reinstalled Photoimpact 12 and Ulead Photo Explorer 8.6,
Will test this fresh installation for a day, and then report my findings here.

Petgabor you could make the file Iedit12.cfg read only in
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\12.0\Ulead.DAT\
This worked for me as a workaround.
Set all the settings and then make the file read only.

You can do that with windows explorer, search the file then select it, right click and go to properties.
Then mark Read Only behind Attributes.
For me this at least prevented PI-12 from resetting the Preferences.

I don't know for sure if this has anything to do with your problem but I believe that 1024x768 is a minimum requirement for PI12. Have a look here:

http://www.ulead.com/pi/sysreq.htm

Hope that helps.

Thank you klowther, that shouldn't be a problem as I always work in 1024x768 with PhotoImpact.
1024x768 is also my settings for the windows desktop.

Settings got reset again 2x today, with the new install. :(
I think it's time for me to contact tech support and see if they can do anything.

I also could not reproduce this issue, either....

Is there any software you installed in your system will scan or remove files?

htchien the only program that runs a scan for files is McAfee virus scanner.
However it will only scan when I want it, it just monitors everything and reports if he finds a suspected action.
Files are only removed after my permission, McAfee will ask what action he has to take.

I know at leats five other people that have the same problem.
On an German forum it writen that Ulead is aware of the problem and are working on a patch for this.
However I can't confirm that claim.

I think it's the file Iedit12.cfg in
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact\12.0\Ulead.DAT\
that is reset everytime.
I searched the system and there isn't any other copy of Iedit12.cfg.
So I don't know where he get's the default settings from.
I also checked the MS XP event logs, can't find any listings there for PhotoImpact's files.

I also noticed this error being listed in PhotoImpact.
Application exception occurred:
App: C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 12\Iedit_.exe (pid=3404)
When: 1/20/2007 @ 18:19:00.109
Exception number: c0000005 (access violation)

However the date and time do not make sence as I reinstalled PI-12 after that date. :?

I didn't get any response yet from support, so I will be waiting for that.
So far I have no clue why this happens, I had some guesses but they seemed not to be the problem.

Thanks for the 'read-only' tip, it seems to work now.

...and I also have McAfee installed...

I'm having this problem as well. I just now started PI12 and it popped up the welcome screen and had forgotten my altered preferences (of which there was only one, displaying the quick colour panel).

For reference my PI12 is a full install from the retail CD on a 5 month old system which has never seen any previous graphics editors installed, PI or otherwise. I run it at 1024x768 all the time. As I said, the only real preference I change is to show the quick colour panel. But I also tweaked the width of the easy-palette so that it would show 3 columns of thumbs when there is no tree in view. This width has also reset to the default. Oh, and it had defaulted the other tool panels as well.

So I immediately shut it down and restarted it and now it has remembered my preferences this time. Btw, this was only the second time it has forgotten the preferences at startup after being started no more than about 30 times since installation.

My PC has 1GB RAM and AMD 3700+ cpu on Win XP SP2, so its well capable of running this software.

I'm having this problem as well on my xp machine. I can't even get PI 12 to work on vista and that's after the vista patch.

Sorry I haven't been posting on any progress about my problem lately.
I have been away for two weeks for family matters.

In the time I was away my systems PSU and mainboard has failed.
I now have new once's installed and are working with a fresh install of everything.
I have opted for a clean new install of XP pro after reformatting the harddisk.
Hoping this will solve the problem with PI-12 too.

Didn't work with PI-12 yet, just got it reinstalled.
Still have to reinstall other programs.
As soon as I start to work with PI-12 again I will keep you informed about my problem.

Quick note for developers: after installing the new update PI STILL forgets my preferences...have to keep iedit12.cfg read-only. (Uninstall/clear install/upgrade patch)
