Apple Quick Time Corrupted during Uninstall of VS10+
Has anyone had any issues with Apple Quick Time - Seems that when I encountered installation problems while upgrading from VS9 to VS10+ that I corrupted my Quick Time program ( I use the basic "free" version). Just to get you up to speed. I installed VS10+ last week...encountered CD audio ripping problems, so I uninstalled. Had the same cd audio ripping problems in VS9 - so something in the upgrade of 10+ altered my registry since I hadn't had that problem before. So I rolled my computer back 2 days and restored it to where it had been working perfectly. Since then I've been back to working in VS9 and have completed a project which worked perfectly. However, last night I tried to open Itunes and I got an error message that QUick Time was not installed on my computer - weird because it was still on my desktop and program list. I decided to uninstall it and re-install it again - and I keep getting an error message during the installation that the installation was not complete. Itunes won't open without Quick Time and QUick time won't install. I'm stumped as to what to do. Wondering if there might be a problem with the Window's installer wizard? Any advice would be wonderful. I'm thinking I may need to do a roll back again?

I recently was asked by a friend to look at her broken computer - a problem with i-Tunes and quicktime. She does not have any video editing programs on her computer and does not do any video editing.
The symptoms you mention above appear to be identical.
You must firstly uninstall quicktime before you can install it again.
Please view:
uninstall quicktime
You should then try and re-install i-Tunes which will also re-install quicktime in the process.

Hi
In the past I had problems when using QT 7 on VS 9
I reverted to QT 6, all was ok
I believe VS 9 uses QT 6
VS 10 uses QT 7
So when installing VS 10 I installed QT 7 over 6 (if that makes sense)
At the moment I think I am with 7 and all is ok.
Steve could this be a problem when upgrading to VS 10 ?

Trevor,
Sorry if I made it sound confusing. No need to uninstall quicktime when upgrading from VS9 to VS10 or any other program requiring quicktime.
The problem with installing i-tunes is that it gets stuck during its installation process when it tries to install quicktime if a corrupted copy of quicktime exists.
Attempting to re-install quicktime fails unless you firstly remove the corrupted copy.

quicktime and vs9-10+
Thanks everyone for your responses. At least I feel somewhat relieved that the problems are inter-related and that I may not have a problem with my operating system.
I did try to un-install the corrupt version of quick-time - it didn't seem to want to go away. I then tried to un-install it in safe mode. I thought I un-installed it successfully - then I went to re-intall Quicktime V7 with itunes and again had an error.
I think I'll try to go back to QUicktime 6 and see if that improves the situation.
I'll keep you posted.

quick time
Hi Ken - Actually I'm not too confident to do that but I have someone who's supposed to come over tomorrow to help me. He's a certified PC technician and this is what he suggested might be the next step. I'm really hoping to avoid reformatting the disk and starting again....although the good news is that all my video projects are stored on an external hard drive. The only files that I'd need to back up is everything in My Documents and the Ulead libraries - which I found where they were hidden. I'll seek advice if I need to do that.
Thanks as always for your support - I'm so aggravated over this!

Ken -
I took a stab last night at un-installing and reinstalling Quick Time - this time using version 6....I thought I had Quick Time successfully un-installed. I restored my computer back to 2 days ago when I first discovered the issue and uninstalled quick time - it seemed to go away. then I took out theVS9 disks and installed quick time 6 from the utilities on the disk - seemed to work....but when I clicked on the icon on the desktop I got an error message suggesting that I un-install and reinstall quicktime. When I tried to open itunes - it said I needed to re-install itunes. HELP!! I tried to repair itunes rather than reinstall it and it was unsuccessful.
I'm not sure what my next step should be....
I'm considering editing the registry to remove quick time
I'm considering re-installing VS10+ - just to see if I can get quicktime 7 to work. This was the point where the trouble started...ie when I tried to upgrade to VS10+ - so maybe this could be helpful?
I can fully un-install itunes and re-install - but I still need to solve the quick time problem for it to work.
At last resort - I can re-format the hard drive and start from scratch. This will require a lot of backing up - particularly the ulead libraries and My documents data - which includes image, video and music files. Then of course I'll have to re-load all my software - all of which is a huge undertaking.
Any suggestions as to what to try and in what order of preference?
Also - If I remove quick time from the registry will this have any effect on Video Studio???
Oh and I forgot to mention there is one other option - I can just forget about having itunes and quick time on this computer - copy my itunes library to my laptop and go on working without having Quick Time ( or itunes) on my editing computer. Do I really need it for Video Studio? If I don't, I suppose I should be able to upgrade to 10+ without it?
Also - I received from Ulead the full version of 10+ as opposed to the upgrade. Do you think I might have more success installing this?
THANK YOU thank you for reading and listening to my issues.....

Hi Ilene
Ken is probably in bed at this time
My problem with Quick Time and I-tunes started when my son installed I-tunes and QT 7. At the time I was using VS 9.
Video Studio would crash on occasions, I very rarely have crashes, well no crashes that I cannot account for. But these were too regular.
Uninstalling I tunes, and reverted to QT 6, cured my problems.
After installing VS 10 I started with the same problems, ( I have both VS 9 and 10 installed) only to find QT 7 installed.
Reverted to QT 6 and all is well.
I have just checked my system and I am using QT 6 with VS 10.
Ok I did not want to do this but I will install QT 7 to see what happens.
Will get back to you. If my system is still working.
At no time did I manually change the registry
Computers can be such a pain.

Hi Trevor - thanks for responding. The biggest issue that I'm having is "uninstalling" quick time - it just doesn't seem to want to go away. I'm only considering going to the registry to try to rid it from my system. My PC tells me it un-installs QUick time - but when I go to re-install it fails.
What do you think of running Video Studio without Quick TIme installed on my computer - would it be an issue. I don't know whay VS needs quicktime - it doesn't even recognize quicktime mov files as far as I know.
My PC tech is coming over this afternoon - hope to resolve this with a little "hands - on" support - at this point I'm getting kind of frazzled from this!

Hooray - Problem SOLVED!!!!
Quick Time 6 is installed and working again - Itunes is installed and working again - VS9 seems to be in tact. When I calm down from all of this I will again attempt to install upgrade to VS10+ - I will keep you posted!
Here's what I did to resolve - and I must say, Apple support was great! They really helped me through the un-install and re-install.
Here's what I learned....When I did the un-install of VS10+ it did corrupt Quick Time and hence itunes could not run with out it.
Quicktime however did not completely un-install as it was still in my registry.
When you uninstall quicktime, you are given the option uninstall or completely uninstall. The recommended option is to simply uninstall. There was a warning presented that if you "completely uninstalled" that you would affect any other programs that were associated with quicktime. This caused me concern - wondering how it would effect ulead and any other video editing software that I had. I was also advised by my PC tech to do the uninstall only. PS - Apple said I needed to do the "complete uninstall" and that this would at the same time remove Quicktime from my registry....I did that and it worked.
I reinstalled quicktime 6 ( as per Trevor's advice - thank-you) and uninstalled and reinstalled itunes. All my music was thankfully still in tact ( although I had backed it up)
the lesson learned is that to uninstall quicktime - you must do it completely despite the adverse warnings against doing this.
thanks again, Trevor and Ken for all your good advice and support.
This site has been so helpful me and I appreciate it!

Stayed tuned for my attempts to upgrade to 10+
