Overdubbing pics

Question:
(Please feel free to tell me the correct! way of going about this editing lark! )

Ive edited my little movie. In my movie timeline i have all my clips, some long, most short and very short all lined up complete with the occassional transitition and have added a few overlays too/titles as well.

So..now i want to polish my edits..perhaps make the sound from one clip attach itself to another clip....HOW do i do that? simply! I just cant figure it out.

Ive managed to get as far as experimenting..by, once in the sound timeline, copying the sound track from one clip, then re-positioning it perhaps just a little before the clip actually - visually - starts..and yes, it works...kind of...but throws out of sync the latter stages of the original clip.

Ive made it sound more confusing than it is.

My problem is, i have - say - a 3 minutesoundbite...i only want to use the image of the two people talking for a few seconds...then cut off to another image but leaving on the sound to carry on over the next clip. So - if ive already edited my movie ( say - using only 30sec image of the 3minutesoundclip i want to use) how do i then 'reedit' in the sound timeline the sound bites i want..BUT still keeping intact the original edited film...

i dont really want to start lengthening my original edits...tried it..gets into an awful mess...but cant seem to see another way...unless i copy the original sound clip into the sound timeline...and then..somehow!! match up the words when the people are speaking...if you know what i mean.

Ive tried the guides, ive tried this forum for similar probs, ive looked at the examples...to me this problem is a very important one as it really allows your video to speed up, getting rid of unnessary shots whilst still keeping the speech intact like a voiceover...SO, im guessing theres a very simple and easy way of doing this.

What is sounds like you are wanting to do is a J cut. If so have a look at the J & L Cuts tutorial..
