technique question

Post by MrA »

I know this isn't searchable, so, I didn't even search the message board for an answer.

This is more of a technique issue with VS 10+, rather than a problem with the product.

I want to "clone" an indivdual in a series of shots. As an example, I want the subject to walk up to a couch sit down on the end of the couch, then in another shot, have the same individual walk up and sit in the middle of the couch, so forth, so on, till the person has sit to the end of the couch.

The final edit would be the same person sitting in all positions of the couch.

The problem I am having, is the "opacity" of the overlay tracks. Either the first track goes away and the second track "overrides" it and wipes the underlaying track, etc.

What would be the best settings to accomplish this "effect".

Try it, set up a tripod and camcorder, aim it at a couch, and make several short vids of someone sitting in diff positions on the couch, and try to combine them to make it looks like all vids of the person is setting next to each other.

Think it is the lack of understanding of what to do is my problem..

When I worked in TV production, we used to do this with wipes that we could bend in order to allow shadows to fall into the other layers of the effect. With the wipe generator and the VTRs lined up correctly, we could move the wipes invisibly during the shot. This in combination with CSO (chromakey) worked pretty well. In video studio, I haven't played with the various wipes, chromakey and cropping effects available, but creating multi layered split screens should be possible, and I'm sure that some members of the forum have tried this and will help you.

As a follow up; this obviously could easily be done as a green screen effect if you had access to a very large green screen, but I'm assuming that isn't the case here.

That's a maybe.. but, I don't see how a green screen could work in this case. The camera is in a fixed position on a tripod, plus, I have background issues, (wall, pictures, etc.), not to mention the sofa, plus foreground stuff, (coffee table, etc..). I have a large enough green screen, but, placement would be awkward and, like I said, no real idea where to put to use..

I am thinking this is probably going to be a filter issue, like opacity, or something like that.

Hey Mr. Amigo,
I remembered seeing this tip from a contest a few months back. Basically you do a split screen, maybe using 1/3 and 2/3 in your example, render and split screen again to add the third person/clip.

The original tip is at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8894

Might work better than trying to overlay the whole image. Cheers.
