Cannot join video clips

Hello,
I am new at this video editing and have a question that I am sure has a simple answer. I am trying to edit old VHS tapes. I have been able to capture the footage onto my HD and store it in My Pictures. I am using Movie Factory 3.

I can add the footage to my project but I want to eliminate or shorten some scenes. I thought that by using the multi trim function I would be able to do this. I have been able to place start and end points to a number of clips and they appear in the media clip list. At this point I am in the multi-trim video screen. I am also using the retain selections mode. My problem is that I can't join these clips together. I can't select more than one clip at a time. I have tried to use the CTRL key and select the clips but that doesn't seem to work. While I am in the multi trim screen I see all of my individual clips. At the lower right hand corner I have the OK/Cancell option. If I choose OK I am taken back to the Ulead movie factory screen. At this point all of the clips that were previously in the media clip list disappear and are replaced with only one clip. The Join/Separate video option is greyed out and can't be used.

I know there must be a simple solution to this, can anyone provide some insight?
