Any guidelines on 16:9 ?

Post by pyvo »

In anticipation of buying a 16:9 ratio TV in the future, I have started filming my Sony miniDV sequences in 16:9 format.
When played back on a 4:3 TV, the image is of course, compressed so that everyone looks tall and thin.
Using UMSP7.01 I have set the project to PAL 16:9 (720x576) and activated non-square pixel rendering.
Is there anything else to be taken into account ?
For example, when creating a DVD file (for use with for example MF), should the input PAL DVD format file be 16:9 or 'letterboxed' 4:3 - is there a difference in quality, resolution, etc.
When viewing on a 16:9 TV, are there options to switch from 16:9 to 4:3, to overscan etc.
Thanks for any advice or links to websites that explain this.

... and do I need to create 2 different output files depending on whether it is intended for a 4:3 TV or a 16:9 TV ?
