Chapters set beyond 60 minutes start 4 seconds early in VS10

Post by hillaj »

Have come across a curious problem in adding Chapters in the Share-Create Disc-Add/Edit Chapters phase of the Recommended Procedure. Chapter points set beyond the first hour start approximately 4 seconds earlier than the timecode on the final PAL DVD and in the Preview before burning. Chapters upto the 1 hour point are fine. All chapters set beyond 1 hour start 4 seconds earlier i.e. it is not cumulative. Also, when I click the chapter thumbnail in the Preview or on the final DVD, the menu page fades to a still image of the correct intended frame/chapter point then the video starts 4 seconds earlier.

Now it gets really confusing. I then checked the timecodes outside of the Share module by selecting the MPEG video and checked the timecodes of the Chapters before and after the 1 hour mark. The timecodes for all chapters upto 1 hour agreed with those in the Share module, at least to the nearest key frame. However, those after the 1 hour point have timecodes +4sec more than shown in the Share module. I have previewed the video over the 1 hour transition inside and outside the Share module and cannot see the missing/additional 4 secs.

Has anybody seen this before - or can you replicate the problem? A partial work around is to add 4 secs onto the post 1 hour chapter points in the Share module. However, this is not a complete fix as when I click the thumbnail it now fades to an initial (still) frame 4 seconds into the scene before now starting at the correct beginning of the scene.

This problem occurs on all my PAL MPEG2 files/DVDs which have Chapters set beyond the 1 hour marker.

For info - I have been capturing Hi8 tapes in DV AVI using a Canopus ADVC100. Editing has been completed in DV-AVI, with simple trims and adding a start and end Title. Have then encoded to PAL DVD MPEG 2 file as below:

PAL DVD
MPEG 2 Lower Field First
24bits, 720x576, 4:3
25fps
Variable bit rate - 6000kbps max
DD Audio, 48khz, 256kbps

Duration 1hr 37mins

Then into the Share module with nothing in timeline, added the MPEG video, checked/updated Project Settings to match and then entered Add/Edit Chapters module.

Thanks,
Andy

Not able to help, but I can confirm my own experience similar to yours. I have been editing PAL recently. I haven't measured the time error, nor analysed end results (other than simply to play them) but, yes, after 1 hour, I do get a disparity between the time index displayed and the actual/effective point of the chapter mark in the finished product.

I never noticed this because my DVDs are all under 60 minutes. Sounds like a bug to me. Please open an issue with Ulead Tech Support. Maybe we will get a fix...

Nice to know someone else has seen the problem. I did tinker around some more with settings and work flow and managed to generate a chapter marker (in the Share/Burn Preview) which did not have the problem. Unfortunately, I did not record the exact flow and it may have drifted from the Recommended Procedure. I will experiment some more to see if I can diagnose further and report back if I find a reliable workaround, which has no adverse side effects. If it really is a reproducible bug I will pass to Ulead in the hope that it will be fixed.

Thanks,
Andy
