Subtitles...I can't watch them when editing them in my proye

Hi fellows...pls help me with this. i want to enter a subtitle to movie i have, i follow the sequence, click the subtitle tab, click edit/add subtitle and there i write the segments subtitles i want. I put time to them and the problem begins, when i write something as a subtitle it doesn't show on the screen, it only shows when i double click in a small square on my movie. If i ignore this, by the time i previzualyse my movie, subtitles are not there...so why is this happenening? How can i make subtitles appear in my movie....pls explain me.
