Filesize?
What size is that 17-minute file? Are you capturing to DV Type-2 files? And is it possible it is capturing closer to 18-19minutes?
Do you have Fat32 formatted hard drives? If so, you could be running into the 4gb filesize limitation of Fat32...
The one thing that might say this is not the case is that 17 minutes of dv .avi doesn't quite add up to 4gb (but if you are capturing dv type-2 .avi's, then it gets closer).

File System?
How are your drives formatted? Fat32 or NTFS?joosuna wrote:I am having a similar problem in creating a video file...some times
the 25 minute project will go through the process. but the finished product stops at 18 minutes...I have windows XP.
I capture the original video directly from my mini dv camera.

Computer Specs?
What Operating System are you running? How many hard drives, and how much free space on each?
Do you plan to do any editing, or do you just want to "transfer" your dv tapes to dvd?

Few choices...
You have a few choicesclash101 wrote:xp with two hard drives 60g and 140g i just want to transfer the tapes but i want to watch them on my dvd player with my television

1) make one of your hard drives (not the system drive) NTFS -- then you can capture as big as you want (dv .avi runs ~13gb per hour)
2) capture in smaller 4gb chunks (18-19 minutes at a time)
3) capture directly to mpeg2 (if your computer is up to the task -- you would need to make sure to disable all non-essential background tasks, and don't do any thing while capturing). This won't get around the 4gb limit, but you will be able to capture much more "chunks" at a time depending on your bitrate -- this is not ideal if you plan to do heavy editing, but it's great if you just want to burn it to DVD because it can be DVD Compliant as soon as it is captured
4) I'm sure there are other choices that I can't think of at the moment...
