Newbie - help with capture
Hi everyone,
I have just bought and installed VideoStudio 8 and I am having a couple of problems
1. My captured video is dropping frames - >400 in a 4 minute clip.
I have tried DV1 and DV2. DV2 is better, but not much.
2. I get a relink message every now and then and I'm not sure what to do with it. If I click 'relink', I get a 'file doesn't exist' message. I did read somewhere on the forum about this being connected to a WinXP patch to do with date/time(?), and tried to download it but the download failed with an'access is denied' message. No idea why.
I have previously captured one clip from the same camera (Panasonic NV-GS5) with no problems.
My PC has all it needs in the form of memory, speed and space, I use WinXP and am in a PAL area.
Please could someone help me to get over these teething problems
Many thanks
Anji

re: help with capture
Thanks for your reply,
I have tried to follow the instructions at the beginning of that first post - I printed it off for reference!
I set it as best I could, although I didn't find it easy to discover where to go to change some of the settings.
The capture is still jerky.
My processor is 1.92Ghz, with 1Gb of Ram, so I followed the settings for mini DV - AVI (DV) type 1
Any ideas?
Thanks again
Anji

Hi,
Two things to look at that might..... solve your problem.
1) Make sure all TSR programs like anti virus, internet access, screen savers office and other memory hungry processes are shut down.
I use a programe called "End it all" Seach using Google for it on the web.
If used, this will shut all these programs down enabling your system to concentrate on the one task your after......ie capturing.
2) Also, look at your hard disk. Make sure you have DMA enabled on your hard disk. Disable write behind caching and increase your page file swop size to twice your ammount of RAM. All this is explained on page 176 of the V.S. 8 users guide. I would also suggest that 20Gb free isn't enough as this guide also states 30Gb as a min.
I have done this and had no probs at all with any capture probs.
Hope this helps you bud.
Post if it does.
P.S. I too have a Panasonic video camera an NV-GS70B and find it an excellent camera.

Thanks for your reply,
I have already done all the stuff with the write-behind caching and the DMA and swap files, I guess the only thing left is the amount of memory. I will try and chuck my son off the computer - that should do it!
I'll go get the End it all program as well, and see if that helps. I have been working with other tech help boards (because I am a bit of an ignoramus) to try and reduce the number of running processes at startup, but it's not easy these days when you do need so much protection from the creepy-crawlies of cyberspace.
As you say, the Panasonic mini DVs are great - I got mine for a six week backpack trip in Ecuador a couple of years ago - making up for not having a gap year when I was a student 25 years ago! - and it's been going strong ever since. But I do have 6 hours worth of tape from then that I have yet to edit.......
Anyway, thanks for help - it is much appreciated.

Anji.
About the dreaded internet crawlies. If you block all traffic on your firewall and/or completely disconnect your internet connection from your modem, you will be OK and free from picking up net viruses.
It should help if you shut down all your antivirus and other "behind the scenes" software.
Here's hoping..............?
Allan.
