Why doesn't my menu match the tutorial?
I recently purchased PI 11 and wanted to use the Extract Object tool that is mentioned in the tutorial video 3. I opened a photo, went to Object, then looked for Extract Object command. But it doesn't exist! In fact, when I looked at the paused tutorial screen I also saw things like Match Color (or something like that) that also wasn't on mine. What gives?

In this particulat instance I'm absolutely certain that the problem sits in front of the PC.
I can only guess because I know nothing about your system except that you use PI 11. One doesnt have to be an Einstein though to work out that you have not selected the right work space.
Have a read of this http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8963 and, in case you need more help, provide the minimum detail to get a response.

I just entered my system info in my profile so you can now click to see it. Other than the system information, what do you need? Most of the information listed in the topic you linked to doesn't really apply to my problem. At least not that I can see. Do I need to give more explanation in what's happening? I'm new to the program, so I don't really know what you mean by not being in the correct workspace. If I only have one photo open, how many workspaces can I be in?

Well, did you ever look at the manual? How many workspaces do you want?hockeydragon wrote:... I'm new to the program, so I don't really know what you mean by not being in the correct workspace. If I only have one photo open, how many workspaces can I be in?

Which one are you in?
I would try the others also

Funny guy. Anyway. . . I did look in the manual and my menus don't really match what I see there. THAT is why I came here for help. I assume you're trying to be helpful, but my drop down menu for Workspace only shows Customize underneath Toolbox. There are no workspaces listed. I don't know if I've set something up incorrectly or what.

Sorry hockeydragon, sometimes I get carried away, no offence intended. Of course I should have known that you had a faulty installation. Follow these instructions to remove PI completely and reinstall.
To reinstall the program here are the steps that Ulead suggests:
1. Please launch Windows Explorer and go to Tools>Folder>Options and on the View tab check "show hidden files and folders".
2. Empty contents of your Temp folder under C:\Windows\Temp.
3. Uninstall Ulead PhotoImpact using the Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel.
3a. Goto C:/Document and settings/ and under each user listed look for a folder called Application data. Here you may find a Ulead Systems/PhotoImpact folder. If you do open it and delete the folder corresponding with the version you are trying to re-install.
4. Go to C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems then delete the PhotoImpact folder.
5. Go to Start > Run and type: "regedit" then click OK. This will open the Registry Editor program. Go to C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information and delete the following folders if they are present:
{FE58B892-3825-4610-A6A2-E6EFCA83BD97}
6. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Uninstall and delete the following folders if they are present:
{FE58B892-3825-4610-A6A2-E6EFCA83BD97}
7. Locate the identity enclosed in curly brackets that corresponds to Ulead PhotoImpact, delete the said entry.
8. Please delete all PhotoImpact folders on the ff: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ulead Systems\and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Ulead Systems\
9. Close regedit and restart your computer.
10. You can now proceed to reinstalling PhotoImpact. Be sure to logon as Administrator before installing your software to avoid restrictions.
Note: Before installing, please temporarily close other running programs or applications including antivirus, norton utilities, screensaver, other memory resident programs including Internet connection, etc. to avoid unnecessary conflict and restrictions within your system.

I did the complete uninstall, then reinstalled as you suggested, but I'm still having the same problem. I'm wondering if it's because this is an SE version of the software? It came as part of a software suite that included other products as well. There's nothing in the PhotoImpact splash screen or in the "About PhotoImpact" window that says SE however. This really has me puzzled. Here's what I see.

That doesn't make sense Steve. OK, the SE versions are often limited in what they can do but surely don't lack the basic functionality?
The different workspaces serve the purpose of having only the tools required for that particular task present. The Photo workspaces do not have the graphics tools for example.
I still think the workspace selectors are there somewhere.

They might be. It is only a suggestion that it might be a restriction of the SE version.
The only SE version I have that I am able to make version comparisons with is MovieFactory. I have the full version of MovieFactory 4 (plus a couple of others) and a SE version of MovieFactory 4 that ships with MediaStudio 8.
You would be surprised at whats missing from that SE version.

The first thing I noticed was the lack of Extract Object under the Object menu. It's not like it's there, but dimmed. It's not there at all. Here's what I see:

I tried to find Extract Object in the help file, but it doesn't show when I try to do a search. I looked at the help topic for Object Menu and Extract Object doesn't show there either. How about on your version. If you go to Help and search on Extract Object, does it come up with anything? Also try looking at the Object Menu topic. Does it show Extract Object in the picture?

I have never used this function but found it in the help files.

We still don't know which workspace you are in. When you click on "Customize" in the Workspace menu

what do you get? Mine looks like this

The workspace you are in should be ticked.
In the "Graphics" workspace, the function can be found hereExtracting objects
Extracting is another method for selecting and drawing out a subject from your image or object for further compositing. Use Extract Object to extract an object from a selection. You can extract the object in 4 steps: Draw boundary, Extract object, Adjust degree of extraction, then Refine object.

Notice the differences between my menus and yours. Mine don't even HINT of Extract Object or show different workspaces. What I bothers me is, even if this is an SE version, why would it have a menu for Workspace, but then not give you any? This is weird. I keep thinking there is some option I need to toggle on, or something like that. Notice that I on ly have one Profile option under the Customize menu. Where the heck are all the other ones? I see I can import profiles, but from where? There is also an option to export them. I wonder what would happen if you exported yours, sent them to me and I imported them. Here's what shows on my screens:
