how to install 8.01 patch on trial version?

I have 8.0, trial, installed alongside 7.0x (purchased, upgraded from 6). The 8.01 patch won't install, with the "version 8 not installed" error (or whatever). Posts on the old board indicate that the patch won't install on the trial version. This can't be possible. What good is a trial version that won't work properly without a patch that won't install on the trial version? Does anyone have a way to install this patch on the trial version? Otherwise, the situation sure isn't encouraging me to shell out scarce money for version 8. Thanks.

Sorry, Mike, but you can't upgrade the trial versions.
