I hope someone can advise me on how to maximize our DVD recording speed.
We have been buying 4-8x DVD blanks for some time and used Panasonic Standalone burners for creating DVD for our clients.
This week we decided to take the plunge and use our internal burners for projects. All of the burners are either Liteon or Samsung and rated at 4x. The problem is that the maximum record speed (based on what Roxio or Nero says) when DVD burns is 1x.
Are we expecting more? Do we need to make some adjustments?
This is very perplexing to us. What are the rest of you experiencing in record speed?
All help is great appreciated.

The burning speed will be decided by:
1. The supported burning speed of the burner.
2. The max burning speed of the media.
3. The way the burning software sets the burning speed to the burner.
For example, if your burner supports to burn at 8X, but you use a 4X disc, then it will only burn at 4X. Another example, if your burner only supports 4X, but you use a 8X disc to burn, it will still burn at 4X.
If you are using DVD WorkShop, you can download and install the following patches in order to improve the burning compatibilities with burners.

Some burning companies like Lite-On will provide burning firmwares for their burners to improve the burning compatibilities. You may go to their websties to check out.
Lite-On - DVD Burner Firmware Downloads:

Lite-On also provides Smart-BURN tool to let you check the compatibility of the media, you can get it from http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_d ... tility.asp . To improve player compatibility with DVD+R/+RW disc, Lite-On also provides Book Type setting tool in that page.
Those tools only work on Lite-On burners. Do not use them on other burners.
Hope this helps.

That sounds like some sort of software/firmware configuration problem. It's like the software "thinks" your drive is only 1X. You're using two different drives so it's not a drive-firmware problem. Are you using the full-registered versions of Roxio/Nero. I don't know about these particular programs, but sometimes the trial/free/lite version of burning software is speed-limited.The problem is that the maximum record speed (based on what Roxio or Nero says) when DVD burns is 1x.
It can also be limited by system speed. Are your computers fast? Are the hard drive and burner on different IDE channels?
On my system, the LED on the burner pulses intermittantly while burning. I think this means the system is not keeping-up with the burner, and I'm burning in intermittant 8X "bursts". The result is about 40 minutes to burn a full DVD. (This hasn't really been a problem for me... I'm not doing production/publishing, so I spend WAY more time editing and authoring than burning.)
