I've just about had it with MF5!
As a long time user of MF, I thought the SP upgrade to MF5 might actually fix the problems. OK, it has fixed some of them - I can now collect AVI files greater that 4GB. But it is still so flakey. Sometimes, importing via firewire from a DV camera works, sometimes as soon as I start the capture MF5 crashes and microsoft wants to know about it. I have gone back to MF4, which captures perfectly every time. Also, in MF5 I have no way to control capture in MPEG format, unlike MF4 I cannot set the bit rate or quality setting, or maybe the place where I can change these settings has moved? Anyone else had similar problems?

Video capture
I've been unable to capture video from my Sony camcorder since I bought the program. Ulead tech support has not been able to solve this problem except to suggest I buy a new firewire card, which I did and still got the same error message. I can capture fine with Pinnacle System's Studio 7 and also with Windows XP movie program, but not with MF5.
I think mine is a different problem to yours as it always successfully recognises my camera as a DV type. Does MF5 actually recognise your camera? also, does Windows recognise it as new hardware when you plug it in - if not it is probably not an MF5 fault

Think of video editing as different steps.
Capture

You do not need to stick rigidly to one product to perform each of these steps. If you have a program that enables you to capture - use it to get the video onto your hard drive.
You can then move onto the next stage with a different application.
The alternative is to spend hours, days even weeks attempting to get something to work and end up going bald in the process!

Some camcorders will be recognized properly if Windows XP is been updated to SP2.

I do have SP2 and all the updates. I have just realised that the Sony camera problem only occurred after the MF5 update pack. So there's something to think about! Thanks

OK, it is not just Sony Cameras that cause MF5 to crash, MF5 + Sp1 now crashes when I start to import from the Canopus AVDC-110. MF4 works fine, and nothing has changed on my system except the SP1 update. What is going on? Is anyone else able to use the external, firewire-connected Canopus AV to DV converter???
