Certainly my version of VS10+ allows me to insert .mp4 files using that extension. If you use the command 'Insert Video', then the dialogue box which appears, allowing you to choose where the files are located, also shows 'All Formats'. If you click on the drop-down arrow which appears, you will see mpeg-4 .mp4 is among the accepted formats. Other mpeg-4 formats accepted include DivX and Xvid, though these use the container .avi format.

As with these latter two formats, the purpose and benefit of .mp4 files is to give a good quality video in a very small file size. They can also be used directly in the newer handheld MP4 players.

However, they are highly compressed, and highly compressed video formats often cause a lot of difficulty when editing. I personally have never had any trouble with straight mpeg-4s or DivX files (I have never used Xvid). But quite a lot of people have reported problems, so be prepared.
