Software crashes out when working with imported mpeg

Post by StewartTurner »

I've captured some analogue video to mpg using a Dazzle unit, and the result is a series of mpeg files.

I have imported these mpeg's into UVS7 to edit but every now and then the software crashes with the classic "Video Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close" type message.

I usually import DV from my video camera as AVI's and experience no problems.

I've spent some time editing the mpg's and coming up with a project ready to export. It has crashed a few times but I found that saving regularly and being patient when the system is catching up with my changes seems to help.

The trouble is that now it crashes during rendering, so I have a real issue to deal with.

Can anyone offer any advice? I'm using VS7 on an Acer Ferrari 3000 laptop, AMD2500+, 512MB, plenty of HDD, etc.

Thanks,
Stewart.

V S Crashing

Hi Stewart,
Have a look at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=15677 and see if that helps Regards Ken

Stewart,
Yes, I remember the bad old days of Video Studio 7. My standard operating procedure was to save the project after every edit step. Memory leaks galore!

Video Studio has come a long way since that time and I encourage you to upgrage to version 10+. You will find MUCH better stability and increased functionality.

Thanks,

I've ordered the upgrade to VS10+ so I hope it solves the problem.
I haven't experienced any serious problems with stability before though. I find the software (Version 7) wuite user-friendly and straighforward. It's sluggish to operate but you get used to that.

I haven't looked into what Version 10+ looks like but hopefully it is similarly laid out and I won't have to go through all the tutorials again. They were useful but very time-consuming!

In case anyone is interested 10+ seems to be much better. It was about time I upgraded I suppose.

Most of the projects now render with no problems.

One project seems to be having problems though. It's a straightforward mpg file which I have trimmed a little bit and added a fade at either end. Other than that I haven't done anything. Twice I have tried to export to an mpg file and left it to get on with it only to find later that VS has disappeared from sight. No error message or anything.

Any thoughts what could have caused this?

Thanks,
Stewart

Stewart,
When you said "exporting" did you do SHARE/Create Video File ? If so, did you follow Recommended procedures (e.g., Custon/Options to set up exact properties)? See http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27
If not, what procedure did you follow?

Please post your captured video file properties and the properties you set up when trying to Create Video File.

Yes, I chose to create a video file. I chose "same as project properties".

The video was captured by the Dazzle device so I'm not entirely sure of its properties. The project properties are almost the same as in the new user guide you referenced but I'm using PAL 4:3 and LPCM Audio.

Stewart,
Successful video editing depends on managing properties and using the right procedure. Start by reading http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27 which advises you to set the properties manually, using SHARE/CREATE VIDEO FILE/ CUSTOM/ OPTIONS, etc.

BTW, to find out your capture file properties, drag a video file into the EDIT timeline, and let VS set the Project Properties to match. Then use menu EDIT/Project Properties and copy the properties from the box on the lower half of the first tab. Paste them into your next post.

Hi,

I followed the instructions below (although I'm not sure what "let VS set the Project Properties to match" means - I assume that I don't have do do anything to make this happen).

Anyway, this is what it told me:
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 5999 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

I've printed out the instructions at the link you gave and I'll read it in detail later tonight.

Thanks,
Stewart.

There is a PREFERENCE setting that should defult to "checked" when you installed VS10+: "Show Message When Inserting First Video in Timeline" If not, check it now.

The properties that you posted are appropriate for analog capture and are PAL DVD-Compliant. It would be a good idea to know these "by heart."

I always set properties manually when creating a video file because it serves as a double-check that properties are correct. Sometimes VS defaults to properties that are inappropriate for the application.

Back to your original post, take a close look at the project that causes VS to crash silently when you try to Create Video File.
Try the following:
Create a new project, put just the video clip in the EDIT timeline and see if you can create a video file, setting properties manually.
If so, try adding the transitions, on-at-a-time and repeat.
If not, the video file may be corrupt and we can try further diagnostics.

Thanks.
I've done what you said and the file seemed to convert ok. I then (stupidly) changed the filename of the new one to match the original and opened the project that was giving me the problem and relinked it to the newly converted file.

It didn't like it very much, so I'm doing it again and this time I won't change any filenames and I'll create a new project for it.

I finally got round to trying again, and it worked this time.
I'm getting the hang of VS10+ and (generally) like it.

Thanks for all the help!
