Pictureshow 2 Text Content Lost

Post by Archbishopgt »

Hi Everyone,
I have just recently needed to reinstall my Pictureshow 2 due to a system failuer, and thought that I had copied all necessary files from my backup disc. Unfortunately, in a rather large project (presentation) that is rather important to me, I have lost all the Text entries that I had inserted (overlaid) onto various images.
Everything else seems fine, but without the text, the presentation is worthless. It would be an awful lot of work to rebuild the missing text.

Can anyone help me with finding the missing file which obviously holds the missing text?

I have restored all the files and directories that I can find, but still have no text.

Help.

I'm not sure this will help, but if you can remember some unique text -- a word or phrase -- you could try the file search.

Go to Start|Search and then select "All files and folders" on the left (of the search window.) Put in "*.*" (without the quotes) in the file name box and enter your word or phrase in the search box. Make sure all the drives you want to search are selected and click on search.

If you have a large drive(s) with a lot of files, the search will take a while.

Hope this helps and good luck.

A little update. I don't think the text search I mentioned in the previous post will work. I did a quick test with a one slide slideshow and some text. The search did not show the text I entered, but when I looked at the folder I saved the slidshow project in, I found the slideshow name (myTest.dps) and an additional folder called "Text". This folder had a file with a .UPT extension. Doing a hex seach didn't find any portion of the text I entered, so I suspect it was not stored in s straight ASCII format.

Do you have any .UPT files in your backup or the files you found?

Lost Text

Thanks for the efforts J_fike.

Unfortunately, I have been down a similar route to what you have suggested, with similar results.

I could not find a file with a known text string in it either. (This seemed like a very logical test to do, and it was dissappointing when it did not work).

Yes, there is a Text folder present, but I have copied the entire contents over from my backup, with no effect. (Another promising idea that did not work).

The only thing I can think of is that there is a file somewhere in the Program Files area which is required, which I have not been able to restore. (The original reason for the rebuild).

Things are not looking good.

Thanks again.

I did a couple more checks and found that the saved project file (the *.dps) contains two references to the name of the text file. However, that text file name is extremely "cryptic".. The references I found in my test file the saved project "mySecondTest.DPS" were: "a3e52dbe-2f0f-4f34-ad00-821e6a5a3c3e.UPT
and
"a3e52dbe-2f0f-4f34-ad00-821e6a5a3c3e.UPTY"

The /text file created was "a3e52dbe-2f0f-4f34-ad00-821e6a5a3c3e.UPT"

So there's a link in the project file (which makes sense - there logically should be a link.)

Hope this will help. Maybe you can use a hex editor to enter the linked name into your saved project?

[edit] You woud have to search the project file (.DPS) for ".UPT" to find where to edit. I would recommend you back up your PictureShow files before trying this. But it would seem that your original project file would still contain the text file references (unless when you ran the file at first it updated or changed the references, which is why I suggest finding and editing the references if they are different.)
