missing photos in photo explorer 8.0

Post by sarecee »

I have used photo explorer 8.0 for over a year now and have had no problems until recently. I downloaded pictures from my memory card as I always have only now some of my photos cannot be found. The box appears that has the destination folder listed comes up and I make my selections as always only this time another box appeared telling me that that folder already exsists and you are to select 'yes, yes to all',or cancel and i selected 'yes to all' and it began transferring the photos, but I looked in that folder for photos and they weren't there or anywhere else on my computer. I've looked in every folder and also looked in the recyclin bin and those photos are nowhere to be found. What I discovered is if I select the same folder as last time it moves the prvious photos to another location which i have not found. I've tried everything I know to try. When someone responds to me please do not talk computer talk because i will not understand,I am still sort of computer illiterate. Thank you for feedback.Any will be appreciated. :?:

I think here we have the reasons for your troubles. Since we are talking about a computer, I don't know which terms to use in lieu :? Since we don't know what the messages were you answered with "Yes to all", how can we possibly guess what happened?

What I fear has happened is this: The images you downloaded have the same numbers/names as images already stored on your computer and you have instructed your computer to overwrite images with identical names.

Did you search the whole hard disk for your images?

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Yes you guessed the problem and I'm very sorry I left that out. I have searched everywhere I know to search and I have not found them. Also ,I do not know if this would have anything to do with the missing photo's but all of my photo's are out of order now. They are all numbered with a different sequence of numbers and have always been numbered in order such as '0001-0002' and so on and now my photos are all over in different folders, not where they were placed. Not all of them are out of order and out of place but most of them are. Would another photo program cause Ulead to behave this way? Thank You.

Don't get me wrong, please. I don't want to offend you but, in this particular case, I feel the problem sits in front of the PC, sorry.

It's impossible to even hint at a possible reason without knowing the folder structure, numbering scheme etc.

I understand your frustration and despair but I don't know what might have caused your symptoms. You may have to change your habits and think of a more meaningfull way to number and archive your images. If you always use the numbers given to the images by your camera, chances are that these numbers will repeat sooner or later. If you let the program decide where to store your images (default folder) there will be duplications soon as well. If you then don't take proper notice of the messages given by the system and make appropriate choices, there is a growing potential for losing images because these are overwritten by the system due to your choices.

Personally, because of the way I take my photos and the sheer number of photos I take with potentially 3 cameras, I have PEX set up to create a new folder for the date the photo was taken and manually create the folder for the year and the month. I also use different naming conventions on each of my cameras.

If you cannot find your images, doing a Windows Explorer search of all the HDD's and partitions for the file extension you use (jpeg?), I fear they are lost for good. Since a simple HDD crash would lose all my images also, the first thing I do, after I import them into the PC, is to back them all up to a CD for save keeping. Only after I have confirmed that my images are saved to the PC and readable on the CD do I delete them from my memory cards.

I suggest you review your process to prevent the same happening again.

Heinz Oz, Thanks for being honest. I'm not offended at all. I told you I was still computer illiterate,so I do not doubt it's a mistake on my part, but I will try your suggestion. Thank you for your time and i will take your advise for future pictures. Have a great day!

I'm glad you didn't take offence at my remarks.

All you have to do is to read the messages you get from any software and think about the implications before you answer the prompts.

I have learned the hard way over the years that, if you let software use its default settings all the time, weird things are beginning to happen. it's best to sit back and ponder a bit about a way you would like your images archived. After that it's only a matter of getting into the habit and to force the software to do what you want. That goes for any software, not just Ulead's.

Good luck with it.
