Unable to access DVDs created on set-top recorder

Post by Franco50 »

I have dubbed an old VHS tape to DVD using my set top VCR/DVD combo (Sharp DV-RW250H) with the intention of using Video Studio 9 to edit out the unwanted material and create a new DVD from that. When I place the DVD in my PCs DVD drive (Sony DW-Q28A) Windows sees it as a DVD-ROM and when I double click on the DVD drive in My Computer it does not display anything as being on the DVD - I would have expected to see a file of some type there. Thinking the disk hadn't been created properly I tried it in the Sharp set top player and it plays fine so there is a recording there. What do I have to do to make Windows (and VS9) see a recognised file on the disk to enable me to edit it?

Your drive may not be supported.

But -- yes -- Windows and Ulead VideoStudio *should* see the file.

If all is working as normal, the IMPORT FROM DVD command is found under the CAPTURE button step (in my Ulead VideoStudio 10+).

Thanks Jerry. Any suggestions which drive I need to get to be able to see this file?

Have you actually tried the VS 'Insert DVD/DVD-VR' command that Jerry has referred to? With your DVD in one of your DVD drives, right click in either the timeline area or library pane or else File > Insert Media to Timeline > Insert DVD/DVD-VR. You then point it at the drive where you have the DVD and then I usually just click on the Import button. If VS can see it, it will say it is "parsing" the disc. After a few seconds, a dialogue box will appear which should normally have the structure of the files on the DVD showing but divided into chapters. You can preview the chapters you might want in the preview window in that dialogue box. Select the chapters by putting a check mark in the little box to the left of the Chapter title, then select 'Import' and the relevant chapters should be inserted into the timeline.

We normally suggest that if this does not work for some reason, then people try transferring the content of the DVD to the hard disc and try it from there. But I guess in this case, since Windows cannot actually see anything on the disc, this might not be a productive course of action!

Failing all else, is there any way you can connect your Sharp combo on which the DVD was made to your computer?

Ken - I will try your advice when I get home tonight. Thanks for that. I don't have a video capture card in my PC and I thought going down the route I have done would be easier than physically having to connect everything together but it may be I will need to do that if all else fails.

Hi, I had a similar problem with a Pioneer set top DVD recorder. the problem was the disc was not finalised. Check your DVD recorder to see if it finalises by default or if you have to turn the finalising on somewhere. My worked fine after this.
