What is the best possible output quality

Post by Comas Toast »

Evening all.

I have read through most of the posts concerning image quality and realized i dont know what the best i can expect from this software on an LCD TV from a DVD.

Is there anywhere i can go to see or receive a sample DVD demonstrating the best results possible from Uleads Video software?

I am trying to cost effectively transfer an SWF file to DVD, i have exported as an AVI at 1240 x 1024 (or something to that effect) with no compression and produced 15 seconds of video footage at over 3gb in size.

Basically when i place into Uleads software and set all the quality settings to their maximum it results in a pretty fuzzy result.

I imported my SWF (vectored flash animation sized to the TV i intend to display it on) file into Ulead directly and found that had the best results but were still a little fuzzy, i tried multiple settings and couldnt improve on them.

Is it wrong of me to expect crisp video footage from this software?

One other question, there is a drop down option menu for encoding type, does that mean there are other compatible encoding softwares available for a higher quality end result?

What quality settings?

Can you specify those that you chose?

Ok, my comp specs are:
Pent 4 3ghz with HT
2 GB ram
256 PCIe Radeon x800 Video card

The flash file is saved at a size of 1366 x 768 pixels (the resolution of the TV i intend to display it on)

The settings i got the best results from Ulead are:

Bit rate:variable 8000kbs
non square pixel rendering was clicked
Frame size 720 x 480
ntsc dvd 100% quality
apply NTSC colour filter and resample at best
and at an aspect ratio of 16:9

all of the other settings were at their default.

The problem i get is the image always is fuzzy, the original is vectored and therefore crisp. I got wondering if this software doesnt produce crisp video. The end result will be displayed on a 20" LCD TV.

Are my settings correct? i am testing out Media studio pro as well, but that uses the same encoder as Video studeo.

If anyone can help out it would be much appreciated.

playback on HD Plasma

Post by raygo »

Here is a little non-tecnical example:

I captured video from a Mini-dv recorder thru firewire.
Followed all the Capture thru AVI properties and settings adivised thru Recommended procedures for UVS9.

Did all the editing then saved as .AVI file. Reason: I prefer to convert avi to mpeg thru 3rd party TMPGEnc encoder as opposed to Ulead since I feel I get a bit better result. btw: did a good amount of importing music, still pixs, overlays etc..

Brought new mpeg file back into UVS9 to burn to dvd+r, making sure all properties were the same as outlined in the procedures..[ I don't really know enough to mess around and change settings/properties so I stick with the procedures.]

Results on Plasma playback were about as good as it looks when you use your camera hooked up to your tv for playback.
Not HD of course but all colors and details were rich and clear.

Only problem I had was I set capture for 4:3 instead of widescreen resuting in a bit of a stretched look on a 42" widescreen Plasma but my friends/relatives whom I made copies for still have standard tv so didn't want them to watch with bars at top/bottom and I can change my screen ratio to 4:3 if needed..

So bottom line is I followed UVS procedures to the letter, and other than using my own avi- mpeg encoder, viewing on a Panasonic HD tv was about as good as it gets in my opinion.
although I do see a HD video camera for me here in the future...

I assume 1366x768 is an HD resolution.
Flash files are quite compressed files to start with, so converting it to avi and changing the size is going to degrade the quality, converting then to mpeg and changing the size is going to degrade the quality.

Why are you starting with a flash file?
What sort of avi did you save the flash file as?
To get the best from the hd sized flash file you need a hd editing programme, a blue ray burner adn then an HD blue ray dvd player.....

Why not start off with a flash file the size of SD tv files, 720x480? As I also assume this is what you will end up playing?

so you got a clear enough image on a 42 "

Im glad you posted that response, you see i have exported the flash file into a huge avi file at a very high quality setting, is it possible i am making my files too large, and therefore with all the resizing thats going on it is degrading the image?

I will try and resize my original flash to TV size and go through the process again.

I would have thought that because UVS accepts SWF files that importing it straight would be the best option, and that has given me best results. Does anyone know how Ulead rasterized the SWF file as it prepares the DVD?

And i appreciate the input, this forum is a lifesave.
