Imcompatability between Video Stidio 10 Plus and Workshop 2

Post by jtballard »

These are not copy protected DVDs. Theses are DVDs I created with Pinnacle Studio. I have used them before with Video Studio 10 Plus.

I cleared the problem by uninstalling Video Studio 10 Plus and reinstalling it. However, after I reinstalled Video Studio 10+, DVD Workshop 2 will no longer work. When I open any project it just hangs and after about 30 seconds I get the message that "DVD Workshop 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I had this problem after I initally installed Workshop 2 (full version) and I had to uninstall and reinstall. That's when Video Studio 10 stopped working. Apparently there is some sort of compatibility problem between the two products.

Funny thing, I ran the trial version of DVD Workshop 2, along with the full version of Video Studio 10, for 30 days without any problems. But when I purchased and installed the full version of Workshop 2 everything stopped working.

I don't know what to do at this point. I don't want to uninstall one product each time I want to use the other one.

Any suggestions?

Forum advice is to uninstall a trial program before installing a full version of it. I quite happily have several Ulead programs installed on my machine.

Your drive may *possibly* be incompatible with the Ulead DVD-VR capture plug-in.

But -- in general -- it's not a good idea to mix Ulead software with Pinnacle software.

Perhaps you removed the Pinnacle software at some point in time, but I generally recommend against combining the two.

I've seen problems with Adobe software mixed with Ulead software on the same computer.

I've seen problems with Sonic software mixed with Ulead software on the same machine.

Your Windows registry can get really messed up and when that happens it is time to do a clean re-installation of Microsoft Windows.

By the way, Microsoft Windows is one of the most sensitive and fragile operating systems in use, in my opinion.

It often can't take the pounding of typical consumer use; that's especially true when various multimedia software products are installed and uninstalled.

Incompatibility with Ulead Workshop 2 and Video Studio 10 +

Post by jtballard »

Pinnacle software not installed on the same machine. I created it on a separate machine last year. And, I always completely remove the trial software before installing the full versions.

I appreciate your suggestions but neither of those is the answer. I have just completed another round of uninstalling and installing Workshop 2. It works but Video Studio dosen't. I then uninstalled and installed Video Studio 10+, it now works but Workshop 2 doesn't.

Very frustrating! Someone sugggested I might not have enough free disk space but I have almost 200 gig free (over 400 gig if you count all three drives). I don't think that's the answer.

I'll try tech support tomorrow by phone. Maybe they can offer some suggestions.

Thanks again for your suggestions and considerations.

Incompatibily problems with Ulead WS 2 and Studio 10+

Post by jtballard »

I have uninstalled via your recommended procedures (Binh Nguyen had sent them to me).

This morning, again following the procedures, I have uninstalled both Ulead products. I have reinstalled Studio 10+ and it is working fine.

I will now reinstall WS 2 using the following steps:

1) Install full version
2) Install additional content
3) Install patch 4 and
4) Install patch 5
5) Restart my computer.

After several attempts at this I am almost gusranteed that WS 2 will work but Studio 10+ will not.

Do you have any more words of wisdom before I start.I'm willing to try anything at this point. Since last night, I have removed any software that even resembles some sort of video processor. So far that hasn't helped.

Could you confirm your hard drive(s) configuration.
Have you installed Windows to the "C" drive or elsewhere and have you installed the Ulead programs to the default
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems paths?

Incompatibily problems with Ulead WS 2 and Studio 10+

Post by jtballard »

All programs, including Windows, are installed on the C: drive. There is still over 140 gig of Free space on that drive. I have 2 other drives I use for data storage and backup only (they have about 300 gig of Free space remaining).

Right, this may take a while and quite a bit of testing before we get this solved. Be prepared to do various things which may not work until we can isolate the problem.

First thing to check is your Windows XP error messages.

How to check the windows Event Log:-
START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System

You will find a red circle with a white cross inside. Double click to open it and there you will find a link
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
This link also contains some hidden code apertaining to your error.
Double click and you will then be given more detailed information and possible cures.

Next possible cure if the above doesn't produce anything worthwhile.
You will need your Windows XP setup disc for this one.
Try the Windows XP System file checker.
Instructions are in this link:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Next possible cure if the above doesn't work.
Try checking your hard drive(s) overnight using chkdsk /R
Please see this link for details.

Please update this post with the results of these possible cures.

Incompatibility with Ulead Workshop 2 and Video Studio 10 +

Post by jtballard »

OK, here's the latest. First "scannow sfc" yeilded nothing and neither did "chkdsk /r" (I ran on all drives and found 0 errors).

But, I reinstalled Workshop 2 and ran and then checked the Application Event Log where I found 2 errors with times relating to the time I had attempted to run Workshop 2 (Workshop 2 hung and said it had encountered an error and had to close).

The errors were as follows:

1) Faulting Application dvdws.exe, version 2.0.0.2, faulting module mmswitch.ax, version 0.9.9.0, fault address 0x00001b30.

2) Fault Bucket 143602645

Also, I attempted to restart Workshop 2 after the error and it tells me it is already running in the background. The only way to get it stopped is to do a "Restart."

I hope this will provide some help. I still can't understand why everything worked fine when I was using the trial version of Workshop 2. I made several DVDs with the trial without a problem. It all started when I downloaded and installed the full version.

This has nothing to do with your main problem, but I noted your reference to DVDWS hanging and your having to restart the computer to get around the fact that it continues to run in the background, even though it is no longer on screen. Can we assume you first went to Windows Task Manager > Processes to see if indeed DVDWS.exe was still running? And if it was, that you tried highlighting it then pressing the End Process button in the bottom right of that dialogue box? (And just in case, to get into Task Manager, you do the classic Ctrl + Alt + Del...)

Incompatibility with Ulead Workshop 2 and Video Studio 10 +

Post by jtballard »

Thanks, Ken, for you input. I too am very happy with VideoStudio 10+. It produced excellent output of very high quality. I couldn't ask for better. It's only when I install Workshop 2, which I also believe to be a great product, that I run into problems. I can't get them both to work on the same machine.

Hopefully, somehow, we'll find the problem and get it workrd out.

By the way, I did attempt to kill WS 2 (background) using task manager but it didn't take. I probably should have tried again but I was in a hurry.
