Unable To Capture
I am just starting up this software and am attempting to capture video from my Canon ZR 85 MiniDV Digital Camcorder.
I am attempting to transfer the data to my laptop with a Windows XP operating system via a firewire card and a 4 pin to 6 pin cable.
The VS7 software fires up ok, and I am able to access all of the menus until I select capture and attempt to input the settings. The software locks up.
The software also lock up when I attempt FILE/New Project.
Any ideas about what I can do? I thought about uninstalling the program and them re-installing, but the software does not come with an uninstall routine.
Also, when going to the control panel and selecting the remove programs function, VS7 does not show in the list. So, I have not been able to remove it.
If I try a reinstall, the installer says it has detected that the program is already installed and then wants to install a second copy in a different location. Of course, I really do not want to do that since I already have the program on my computer that does not work yet.
Your guidance would be appreciated.
Regards,
Steve Jacoby

Steve,
I think that last word on this was to put the miniDVD in the PC's disk tray and import the video into 10+ Edit timeline (right mouse on the timeline and select Import DVD). BTW, you have to "finalize" the DVD first. Edit: Just noticed you are on version 7 - pretty old and buggy. You probably should consider upgrading to version 10+ ($50).

Hi
It would appear that VS is not installed correctly.
You say (Also, when going to the control panel and selecting the remove programs function, VS7 does not show in the list)
It should be there.
I think you have little choice but to try a new install
Not sure about VS 7, but the later versions have a repair option at the install screen.

Thanks for the link to the tutorial.
I got all of the way through the steps to the point where I clicked the Capture button at the top of the interface. The system would then not let me select the DV Type options. Nonetheless, my camera did switch from playback standby to the first frame on the camera monitor. However, I do not get camera data on the computer.
I then clicked the Capture Video button. After some delay, the button changed from green to being grayed out. However, the camera did not respond to the "on computer screen" control commands.
After several attempts to make the process work, I finally did get an error message "Unable to switch to capture mode. Check if your capture driver is working properly. Cannot start the preview graph."
Additionally, I did note on my camera monitor screen that it is recording in 12 bit audio mode - not 16 bit. Is this difference from your recommendation enough to upset the entire process?
In conclusion, I am really close to making things work. Would sure appreciate your help in getting there.

Hi Steve
The audio setting of 12 bit will not affect the capture process.
12 bit is the default setting of your camera, Afaik this allows some spare to voice over using your camera.
For future recordings, you may improve audio quality by changing the 12 bit to 16 in your camera. Whether the improved bit rate is noticeable is another thing.
You will not get the camera data or time code on the computer.
As for your capture problem, If I were in the same position I would do a re-install.

Thanks for the comments.
I would like to do a re-install, but I want to uninstall the original program installation first.
The trouble is that the original program does not show up in my add or remove programs utility in windows xp home edition.
Therefore, if I install again, I will have two copies of the same program on my computer. Also, there is no guarantee that the second installation will be any better than the first.
Any ideas?

Hi Steve,
Try following Steve's (the other Steve..
) tutorial, Full Un-install of VS products. They notoriously leave alot behind anyway when you uninstall. This affects the install. However for you I think you need to locate on your system just where VS7 is installed. Since it is not showing up in your Add/Remove programs, I would suspect that the Installer has been corrupted. Hopefully you can do this without doing a complete re-install of your OS.
In the tutorial registery keys are listed that need to be deleted, as well as folders found in a couple of different locations on a system. Make sure you have backed up your registery before tapering with it. After following the tutorial, then try reinstalling.
