Brand New User Capture Issue

Post by Loubal »

Hello All,
I currently am running a Gateway system with Duo Core Processor at 1.66ghz, I have 1 G of Ram and 30gig of free hard disc space.

I captured video from my Canon MiniDV camcorder into MPEG2 format.
I used all of the default settings in ULEAD.

During the Capture a dialog box opened up several times regarding re-linking.

Also every 10 minutes the capture would stop for something that I can't recall. (DV TR.....) There would be a number in the 7000's which would go down to zero and then the capture would start again.

During capture the video preview was very choppy.

Playback was of very poor quality.

During playback using WMP, I could only view....not ff or rewind.

I would appreciate an explanation as to the above issues.

Also, what settings should I use in order to create video of the same quality as the original in both the computer and ultimately on a DVD?

What should bit rate be for Audio and Video?

I only was able to capture 1 large file. How can I capture a file that is brokn up into many units (like windows movie maker) so I can choose to insert only portions into a final project.

What about FF and Rewind?? How can a file be created that allows this?

Sorry about the disjointed post, but as you can all plainly see, this is my first attempt at anything like this.

Thanks so much for any help that you may be generous enough to give me.

Hi Lou

And welcome to the forum.

Lots of questions here. Take it easy, bit by bit.

Ok

30 Gb is small, the minimum you need when it comes to video editing.

The pause in capture is due to Trans-code Buffering, this occurs when your pc cannot keep up to the incoming data. The capture pauses whilst the buffer is emptied, then capture can restart.

The best way to capture from a digital camera is via firewire to Dv format. This literally transfers the video to your pc without re-coding (no trans-code buffer) But is 13 Gb per hour.

When you capture to Mpeg you should select DVD as the format, NOT Mpeg.
This should improve your quality.

So how are you connecting the camera to the PC?

Ok now read the recommended procedure at the top of the forum.

Also read the Quick Guide from the link below.

Hope this Helps

Hi Trevor,
Thanks a lot for your reply.

I am connecting via Firewire.

I captured to DV as suggested and I also split by scene. However, there are breaks even within a scene. Each Tape is split into approx 25+ files. Is there no way to create 1 big file while capturing while at the same time splitting scenes? When I try to create a dvd from the several split scenes that the capture created will the DVD appear seamless or will there appear to be breaks when piecing the files together?

Thanks again and I look forward to and appreciate any response that you may give to me.

Hi Lou

When capturing to DV you have an option to ‘split by scene’. This will create separate files for each scene detected. In your case 25+.
The resultant video should be seamless.

If you uncheck this option, capture will create one big file.
I find it best to keep the capture to about 15 minutes (personal preference)
You can set a capture duration in the digital clock
The captured files are saved to the capture/working folder, create a new folder for each project.

Now from the edit mode you can apply split by scene to the captured file. (either in the library or timeline) The difference is that here you create thumbnails/links of the scenes and do not split the main file.

(Be aware that when you split by scene in the timeline that the main captured file seems to be tagged as 'split'.
Starting a new project and inserting the file will result in split by scene.)(only noticed this a few days ago) to overcome rename the file on the hard drive.

Hope this Helps
