Just to add my two cents worth to the discussion, I have successfully used this technique for weeks now (referring to dropping vsp files into the timeline of another project). I use it all the time when adding PIP overlays to a project, where I want the overlay to have several different video clips in consecutive order with tranistions in between, since you can't do this in VS10 directly. I have also dropped vsp files into new projects in the main video track with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I learned this technique from Charlie Hill's book, "Getting Results with VideoStudio 9". I would much rather render once, than twice. I always transfer and edit in DV_AVI and then the Create Video File in MPEG2. Shouldn't be a problem to use vsp files containing DV_AVI file types in an another vsp file containing DV_AVI file types. The picture quality of my end result (DVD movie disc played back on 480i TV screen) has always been fantastic, extremely close to the original quality of a direct playback from the camcorder to the TV.
Anyway, as I said above, this is my two cents. It's always worked flawlessly for me.
Problem with videostudio->How to join clips?
