I am currently running Movie Factory 2.12.2 and up until know I had only done projects with a single compliant file, as in VHS to DVD transfers. My last project I tried using 3 compliant files and MF performed what looked to be an up-conversion and turned what would have fit on the DVD into much larger files to burn, with the program returning an error an insufficient DVD disc space. Basically what I found out is that one file works fine and any time I go to 2 or more files MF will convert the mpeg files. Is this a known issue with this version? Is the latest version, 5, going to give issues like this?
Thanks for your time,
Hunter
Coversion Of Multiple Compliant Files, Not One

If the program returned with an error and the files are larger afterwards than what they were before, I hazard a guess that the files in question were not DVD compliant mpeg2 files.
Again, I don't know much about MF 2 but I use MF 4 and use a number of mpeg files to combine on a DVD. The different files are treated like a different chapter each.
I normally capture in DV-AVI and create my DVD compliant mpeg2 files as an output from MSP 7.3. The authoring of the final DVD with a number of different mpeg2 files is rather quick as well because MF only has to create the menus, the actual files are untouched because they are compliant to start with.

Thanks for your reply Heinz-oz.
I would agree with you if it weren’t that when I use any one of the three files by itself, things work fine, no conversion. It's only when I put 2 or more of those same clips into a single project that conversion occurs. Also, I can do the same in TMPGEnc DVD Author 2 Trial and it does things correctly. I just want to make sure that if I go with MF 5 that it does fix this.

Do all of the files have exactly the same properties? If the files have different properties (i.e. different bitrates, etc.) and you combine them into one big file, there has to be some conversion. My last project I tried using 3 compliant files and MF performed what looked to be an up-conversion...
