Import .m2t files into VideoStudio 10+

Post by katweazl »

Hi,

I have captured with a litle app called HDVSplit and have a heap of .m2t files. When I try to add them to the clip library I get a file mismatch error. See below...

Image

Can I somehow import these files or do I have to re-capture through VideoStudio 10?

I can import them ok into Premiere.

Any help would be really appreciated...thanks.

Joe,
Sorry, but, IMO, the worst thing you can do with high definition is to capture with HDVSplit into a zillion little files, all re-rendered, and placed in a format that was designed, not for playback or editing, but packetized to transmit video from place to place reliably (Transport Stream, .m2t files).

You will get much better results by recapturing the original encoded mpeg2 HDV Program Stream (.mpg files) directly, using Video Studio 10+. Check out the high definition tutorial at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13872

Edit: If you really want to split your video by scenes, the right time to do it, IMO, is aftter you capture the video and without actually altering the capture video file. You can do so on any HD video file, in 10+, by placing it it the edit timeline and selecting "Split By Scene", which will "virtually cut" the file, without rerendering, into separate clips, each of which can be further manually trimmed for the final output.

Thanks John,

I had previously had a good read through the tutorial but it was based on capturing in 10+ and I had these files already captured and just wanted to avoid re-capturing them. But it seems that the way to go hey?

I do want to split by scenes because at the moment I am just using small clips of our baby to compress for web to show family abroad. So it is easy just to pull in a pre cut scene...so I will try the method you said for 10+ in your edit above.

Thanks for your help mate

Joe,
You are on the right track, recapturing with 10+.

Your alternative is a whole lot more work, converting each and every one of those zillion m2t files to mpeg and the output could be somewhat degraded.

Split by Scene works very well and you can adjust the sensitivity of the scene selector.

Let us know how you make out!

You might want to try Womble to put the files back together and convert the file to something that VS10 can edit. HDTV to MPEG2 will also convert files to mpeg but your file sizes are limited to 1GB, it is also free.

Ulead Media Studio 8 will convert m2t files so you can edit them.

You can combine .ts files or .m2t files with "COPY"

Post by austingecko »

Files with the .ts or .m2t extension are in the same format.

.ts stands for MPEG2 Transport Stream as does .m2t

(...REPLACE .TS below with .m2t...)

You can combine .ts files using the dos Copy command. If you're combining files named A1.ts A2.ts A3.ts, into a big file named A.ts then you would type " copy /b A1.ts+A2.ts+A3.ts A.ts ". If the small files are numbered sequentially then you can just type: copy /b A* A.ts. It takes about one minute per gB if you go from one disk to another, and about 3 min per gB if on the same disk.

HDTVtoMPEG2 can also be used if you don't like using command prompt. In both cases the small files must be unmodified from when they were first split, otherwise they won't join cleanly.

PLEASE POST BACK TO THIS FORUM IF THIS WORKS FOR YOU!

ENJOY!

Hi Guys,

Well I just bit the bullet and re-captured in 10+ :)

The scene split function worked well thanks.

There are a few things in VS that I am still getting used to (or yet to work out) as opposed to Premiere though. One is that transitions can only be placed between clips. So if I want to fade out a scene at the end of the clip I have to add a colour still...black...and then place the fade to black transition between the end of the clip and the black screen.

I also ran into an audio problem when exporting mp3 audio using Lame with a DivX. The audio was "skipping" and finished well ahead of the video most of the time. So I am just encoding video and using HeadAC3e to convert wav to mp3 and joining with AVImux.

Thanks for your help again guys...this forum has been full of great info.

Joe,
Congratulations on successful capture!

Re Divx: I have had no reliable success in editing high definition Divx. I use Divx and other highly compressed formats only to generate output files for viewing.

My advice is to avoid introducing these formats into your high definition projects. You have more important work ahead, as you work your way through high def. file playback in your own set as well as sharing your HD with others, who are still "HD challenged." :)
