Adobe Illustrator import errors.

I am trying to import adobe illustrator files into Photo Impact 8. I go to path; shape; Import; I click on the .AI file I want and I get this message box error:
"File is not readable." [800:2:276]
I am assured by the keeper of these files that they are output from adobe illustrator.

Only Abobe® Illustrator® 8.0 files or below can be imported into Ulead programs. When making AI files for use in Ulead programs, make sure they are saved in the Adobe® Illustrator® 8.0 or below format.
