I see no dropped frame counter, lowest right on info panel is scene counter.
You have to activate it: File>Preferences>Capture Tab>Show Drop Frame Information (second from bottom)

Yes got it now - just tried 10 minute download no dropped frames - HOWEVER-----

I now have a CRT monitor alongside and in the above capture process it was attached to the camera via s-video and I got the impression that the capture display on VS9 gave a different orange/red saturation than either the CRT or even the on-board LCD display of the camera. So I replayed the captured video using WMP via the S-video output on my video card (ATI) to the CRT and yes the orange/red saturation was different to the off camera original. So I am going from very natural scenes to what look like incorrect lighting settings and with the edited footage to washed out colour with fizzy definition!!??

I am therefore now saying that although they are good my captured .avi is not as good as the off camera picture particularly in terms of colour rendition. Also the colour rendition gets even worse along with definition if footage is edited and produced to .avi result files.

Please can someone tell me how to edit my excellent camera footage and produce DVD's of less than 1 hour format that my friends and family are not going to laugh at the quality!

Are you now saying that the captured footage is not as good as the original footage within the camera.

If you are connecting via firewire and selecting DV as your capture format, then the data is transferred to your pc, just like downloading a file.
No changes, no re-coding. What you have is what you get. DV-Avi.

If there are significant differences then its a different ball game. Start looking at your firewire card, cable etc.

Many thanks once again Trevor

It seems to me that I have 2 distinct problems and they should be tackled as such.

1 The colour rendition of my captured .avi does not appear to be the same as that of a direct replay from the camera, it appears I am getting warmer tones i.e a reddish orange tint bias. However I must do some more investigation of this, as this was a one off observation. I will re-mount my PCI IEEE 1394 card, check cable connection and try another firewire cable. There is no suggestion that the definition is worse in the capture process only the colour rendition.

2 If I edit the captured avi. in VS9 I get a project .avi that is of poorer definition and has washed out colour that is neither comparable to the original or the captured copy.

So I think I have got to sort out (1) first and then retry (2).

Unfortunately I am now away for several days so it may not be that I can report back for over a week so please look out for this thread to reappear.

My thanks especially to you Trevor and all others who have tried to help.
