MPEG 4 SP and DVD Workshop Express Menu

Post by vs »

Hi,

I am using DVD Workshop Express for some time now, and it sure is great. I use it mostly for family videos and slideshows with custom menus.

Now I had the idea of converting some of my favorite sitcoms from DVD to MPEG 4, as there are 4 epidodes on 1 disk, and I was thinking about achieving maybe 12 or 24 on 1 disk, using MPEG 4 SP. Then 1 season would be on 1 DVD. Now, WS Express does not support DVD 9 Double Layer, so I am limited to 4.x GB, hence the thought of MPEG 4 SP.

Before I start, I wanted to find out, if anyone else has tried this? From past experiences, I see that WS will sometimes try to convert the materials into MPEG 2.

My standalone DVD player supports MPEG 4. So I was wondering if WS will support this, making menus and linking to the MPEG 4 files... and allow a non-standard DVD to be burnt.

Has anyone tried this, or have similar experiences? IF DVD WS cannot do this, does anyone have any other ideas, tools etc?

Thanks a lot for your advice in advance

I've never tried it, but I'll make a guess..

Workshop really tries to stick to the video-DVD standard.

My guess is that you'd be better off burning the MPEG-4s with general purpose burning software (Nero, etc.).

And, I would also guess that there is no way to make a menu with a MPEG-4 disc, since AFAIK there is no standard for that, and the player's firmware won't know how to deal with it.
Now, WS Express does not support DVD 9 Double Layer,
Are you sure about that? Have you downloaded the DL Update? (I haven't tried it... I just got a DL burner.)

I have used the Create DVD Folders to make DVDs that are too big for a single-layer DVD and Workshop Express didn't even blink. So, worst case, you can do that and then use 3rd-party software to burn the actual DVD.

I think DVD 9 is a license issue, as it the comparison guide, it says Express will not do DVD 9 Double layer disks.

I am surprised that MPEG 4 has been around for some time, but no chance to build interactive menus etc, for devices that support it.

Well, I researched some more, and found Divx ULTRA supports interactive menus and subtitles, and Pioneer DVD players and other new vendors support Divx ULTRA, just released after PhotoKina.

So I will go for that, pity, as I love the creative side of Ulead DVD Workshop... will still use it any day for normal DVDs, as it is THE BEST, the EASIEST and affordable.
