When capturing into Video Studio, the clips have a default filename that starts with 'uvs', then the date, then a unique code. This filename is so long I can only see the 'uvs000000.....' for each clip in the library - I cannot see the unique clip name.
Can I capture with my own filename, or can I change the filename after capture?

You cannot capture to your own file name and if you want to change the file name you have to navigate to the actual file on the hard drive and change. It is a continuing clunky aspect of VS.
Try the program at this link below. it allows you to batch change file names conveniently. After you do it you will have to re-link the files to VS.

Hi LCB
1 /Float your mouse over the thumbnail in the library to view more info.
2 / You can change the title of the clip, click the white title at the bottom of the clip to edit. This does not rename the file on your hard drive only the thumbnail.
3 / Right click any clip and select properties this shows the save location as the File Name.
4 / Using XP you should be able to batch rename.
Select the clips on the hard drive, right click the first clip and rename, all others will follow sequence.
Be careful when renaming clips being used in a project, VS will lose the clip location and you will have to relink.

Trevor's User Guide
Hi, Trevor....I saved the link to your user guide...it is most helpful.
I've got several Video Studio 10 issues and one of them was how to fit 2 hrs of edited camcorder video onto a single DVD. I'm going to try your suggestion of changing the bit rate.
Another issue currently is that when I render anything, video studio hangs. This applies to everything including creating a wma audio file from a video. I've succesfully rendered stuff to DVD using Nero, so I know there's no issue with XP or my 3ghz compooter.
3rd issue is that I cannot figure out how to use Vid Studio to make a watchable DVD from WMV files. Perhaps I'll have to get another piece of software to do that.
Thanks a BUNCH for your help.
Walt

You'll need WMencoder version : 5.50.4134.600 for certain (I also installed WM9 codec (version 6.0.2900.2172)
More you'll probably need Ulead mediaStudio even the testing version ) installed . This will creat 6 different quality codec options called Ulead-WMV-HD (3 in 1024 and 3 in 720) and accessible with VS10 plus (manual mode to render its the last choice of SHARE).
Smart render if you edit on a week machine like mine (athlon 2600 + 1 giga ddr memory and 7500 recent maxtor 10 dd + a small AGP8 videocard) ; result when converting from mpeg2-hd is very good (like the original hd mpeg2 files from my sony HC1 camcorder) .35% of original size using highest Ulead-WMV-HD quality compression;
WILL BE SHARING VIDEO SOON
look also at the very goood Jhunter hd tutorial he explains DivX compression method. The same logics applies to WMV-HD when you get the good codecs I mentioned;
hope its helpfull, or will share more details
