HDV editing: "DV" timestamp info and split by scen

Post by cgould »

I'm about to buy the new Canon HV10 camcorder, to start the jump into HDV editing video... dvinfo.net had some sample shot .M2T videos to download, they look great!

But, when I import them into MSP8, first it converts them from TS (m2t) to MPG (program) format (no problem there... pretty quick)

However, one feature I liked w/ DV was the shooting date timestamp (for reference, DV scan/media bin organizing etc.), plus it meant scene-accurate "split-by-scene" using the timestamp info, not content.

However, these HDV M2T->MPG2 files in MSP8 don't show any timestamps in the source preview window like my DV avi's do, and Split By Scene only allows "Content" search...

Are both of these "DV" oriented features N/A for HDV MPG2 files? :(
Or are they missing for my samples, due to the m2t->mpg2 editing file conversion? Or maybe someone processed/generated the M2T files removing the info, before posting them online? (they appear to be native camera video, but...)

OK, I have the HV10 camcorder now, and tried capturing some quick sample shots into MSPro8.
I do capture video OK, the camera shows up fine in Windows Device Manager, as AV/C device, and MSPro8 capture module recognizes the device w/ HDV device control etc.

However, as noted in previous post, MSP8 editor does not show any timestamp info, or allow split by scene (timestamp). It also won't allow "cut by scene" in Seamless capture, only max filesize.

The Canon camcorder itself shows the "data code" fine, of timestamp and camera settings, during tape playback... so HDV Mpeg data seems to include it.
Is this something specific to the Canon file & MSP8 not supporting it,
or something more generally true for HDV capture (any camera), or MSP8 just doesn't support the concept yet for HDV?

This is a big deal for my editing workflow...

I don't think MSP8 supports time codes or split by scene in the HDV capture module. I noticed it wasn't available when I first got my HDR-HC1.

Thanks for the info... seems to be MSP8 limitation/missing feature for HDV editing then. That's a bummer. Split by scene/seamless capture etc seems pretty important for HD editing. I don't expect frame-accurate stuff w/ long-GOP, but should at least be able to grab/identify scenes quickly :(

Tobie et al, can a service pack or patch address this?
Does VideoStudio 10+ HD stuff support it better? (if so, is hope for msp8 since it inherits stuff from little brother...)

Interesting update:
I switched the HV10 to "Locked DV" firewire mode, which does automatic downres'ing to SD DV and appears as a DV camera and video data (even if the tape content is HD- Sony has similar setting)..
and all the HDV tape content now works in MSPro8 just like expected, w/ DV Scan, date timestamp/split by scene, etc.- all the metadata is there, just now the video is in SD instead of HD.

So definitely this is more of a Ulead feature support issue.
In meantime, if I want to work with SD but have the original footage in HD (for later), this does work.
