Capturing from Xbox 360 in VS10+ (56k Warning - Pictures)

Post by KugarWeb »

Hi all,
Well previously I have been capturing video from Project Gotham and other such games using my HDV camcorder, coming out with some pretty poor results due to my LCD screen and the picture in general. I currently own a Hauppauge WinTV card in my Media Center PC. I have tried searching for cables and solutions to capturing from the 360 to the PC via this card, but have not yet been able to find a cable suitable for this purpose. Below are a few photographs of the connections I have avaliable on the back of my PC.

I do also own a second TFT screen which could be attached to the PC if needed, or my laptop's screen, so I can view what I am doing on the Xbox as well as what I am capturing.

Colour coded:

Purple - VGA
Pink - High Definition
Red - Phono connections
Blue - S-Video
Green - TV Antenna In
Yellow - TV Antenna Out
White - Wireless Connection Antenna
Black - Digital Audio In and Out

The above connections I believe may be useful to solving this problem, I just don't know how. I haven't highlighted the other connections simply because I don't think they'd be used, although you may think otherwise? :?

When connecting my Xbox 360 normally, I simply use a Joytech VGA Cable to link between the console and my 17inch LCD Monitor. Other than that, the way in which I get audio is through the Red and White connectors from the Xbox's VGA Cable, through a splitter and into the Mic Input on the back of the computer. Below is a diagram to make things a bit clearer.

Depends how clear you need to record. S-Video may work OK into the WinTV card.
Really, I want the video to be as clear as possible. How would I go about connecting the Xbox 360 to the computer via S-Video and would I be able to monitor the video while it is being captured?

I have also tried using Windows Media Player to capture via the Red, Yellow and White Phono connections. However, this has some interference on the bottom half of the screen and had no sound :?

ZDNet also has software for specifically capturing gaming video, but, it's intended for a PC, or rather PC gaming, but, if you get it working through the PC, I am sure this software could capture it as well.

Can't you simply split the video signal from the Xbox to the game monitor and route one side to the computer's tuner card? The sound can be gotten from the RCA out on the Xbox using an RCA-to-mini jack cord to plug into the line in on the sound card.
