ERROR MESSAGE 257.0.0 CONVERT STEP GOT SOME PROBS
Over the past 29 days I have been evaluating a Trial Download of Ulead Video Studio. I have managed to produce a DVD some wks back but it was a bit jerky so I have recaptured the footage from my Sony DCR-HC35 DV Camcorder and I have edited an hour tape down to 21 mins.
Project Properties:-
PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
Don't know what I've done differently but I get the error message as per the subject line.
These are the properties of the clips in the Story Board:-
File format: Microsoft AVI - Open DML
25 fps
Data Rate: 3640.62 kps
Video Compression DV Video Encoder - type 2
Attributes: 24 bits - 720x576 - 4x3
Audio Compression PCM
Attributes 32,000 Khz 16 bit stereo
Unfortunately I am a complete novice when it comes to video and whilst I have read some of the existing threads on this particular subject I am unable to make sense of them relative to what I have done so far!!
This Video Studio 10 Package looks great but unfortunately I now only have another day in which to make up my mind whether to buy it. If it will work then I will gladly do so.
Hope someone can offer me some advice!

What I can see is that your properties don't match. You are capturing to MPEG DVD (MPEG2), and then your video clip properties are DV (AVI), type-2.
Try changing your project properties to match that of your video files, AND change the DV capture to type-1.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.
Don't know how I got to this point of mismatch of properties - I thought I'd understood the manual but apparently not!
Is there anyway I can sort this now without re-capturing as I have about four hours of raw footage [holiday in Italy] already captured to HDD - unfortunately all using the same settings. I suppose the fortunate part is that I have only edited the first hour long tape down to 21 mins - but it took some hours.
Could I solve it by creating a Video File in PAL MPEG2 - would that work?
Thanks again

Yes, you could change your project properties to match your captured video clips. Then go to Share>Create Video Files and render your MPEG2 DVD compatible video files... That should help. However there is the possibility that you dropped frames while you captured to the DV Type-2.
Try rendering a short clip after correcting your project properties to see if that clears it up. NOTE: If your clips have dropped some frames then while burning, problems could show up, that late in the game..

Well - tried that - created DVD MPEG2 File and then tried to output that to DVD but - same again error 257.0.0 some probs..
I checked the properties and they all appeared to match this time - problem is the program is telling me that I have one more day to try it but when I click on try it will no longer launch.
Strange thing is that when I imported this newly created video file into an old version of Roxio DVD Builder it encoded it in about 20 mins and then burned it to DVD OK!
So I am now up in the air with Video Studio 10 - I like the editing part - it's great - but there's something about it that doesn't want to burn to DVD!!!
Don't know whether to buy or not.

Thanks for slapping me upside my thick head...
Should have seen and mentioned this earlier...ROXIO has a drag-n-drop, data-add type utility. I can't recall the name. However if you have any especially Roxio's installed or Enabled, it highjacks the DVD burner. It simply will not allow Ulead (or others) access the DVD. Disable or uninstall it, and then Ulead should be able to burn alright...

I agree with you that there is something about the clips that Ulead's burner doesn't like. It could just be a small corruption to one of the video clips. They are hard to find. It generally takes narrowing it down, by cutting the clip in half, render half see if it works. Then try the other half,...rinse and repeat until you find it.
However it is not uncommon, several members, the experts, ol' timers use more then one product, to produce DVDs. So if Roxio works to burn the DVD's then I would use it. You can use VS10+ for your editing and Roxio to burn the DVDs.
I'm stumped on this one...

Well this is interesting - despite the ERROR MESSAGE 257.0.0 CONVERT STEP GOT SOME PROBS - I decided to purchase Video studio 10. However, because during the 30 day trial period I had added a Seagate 300 Gb USB 2 Drive to my rig [addit. to my existing Western Digital 80 Gb USB 2] - instead of just activating the Trial Softeware, I unistalled that and then downloaded new VS10 software with all drives intalled & visible so that the setup stages would see them initially.
Next I took my original DV (AVI), type-2. edited footage [that which we suspected might be causing the probs..] and output it to DVD. No probs, unlike before it just got on with it and then burned the disk.
Picture quality is good [unlike going via Roxio!] BUT - there is still a problem in that the finished DVD footage is jerky - i.e when the shot is panning - whilst the original DV (AVI) material is perfect in this respect - the final DVD footage is not!!??
Any further sugestions what this might be would be appreciated.

As an off-the-cuff comment, the sort of jerkiness during panning you describe is normally associated with using a wrong Field Order. Unfortunately, I know nothing about your camera, and in particular what Field Order it might use. You appear to have used Lower Field First in your project properties, but it is possible that your Sony camera (as some other Sony video cameras do) uses Upper Field First. However, hopefully someone with greater knowledge of your camera might be able to offer a more sensible comment.
Jerkiness can also be associated with capturing Type 2 DV when your computer is not up to it (Type 1 is preferable). However, you would notice the jerkiness immediately during capture.

See my post about the same error message. Mind you, I think many things can cause this error, but I was able to find a solution in my case and it may be relevant to you or someone else.
