compressing completed videos for the web?

Post by rpavich123 »

Hi,
First I'd like to say thanks for all the good info here. I just completed my first DVD and it came out great, in spite of an underpowered machine, and lack of creative skills behind the camera and during editing.

Two questions:
1.) Instead of making one long movie with several chapters; I made several smaller finished videos to put on one disk. I did this for two reasons: first, it was overwhelming to me to deal with the whole thing at once and I was just spinning my wheels. Second, my machine complained a lot less while working on smaller separate videos. Here is the first question: My DVD menu is "continued" on a second menu and, to me, that's not readily apparant and I'm afraid that people will "miss" the second set of movies on the DVD because the don't realize that their is a second menu.

2.) Question: Can I take "completed" movies that don't have a project file associated with them and shrink them for the web to stream off of my web site or to download? My files are in excess of 1GM or close to it...clearly too much for the web....

I searched compression on the forum and didn't find an exact answer.

Also, what are the pros and cons at this moment for my video...can I just string my several completed videos together into one long one and "re-render" and make each separate vid a "chapter" and still retain the quality?

Hi Bob

I think you are on the correct path to split your movie into several videos.

1/
Each project can be edited separately; I find this easier to cope with.
With each of your projects you Share Create Video File. This creates a separate file for each.

Start a new project Share Create Disc—Add Video
Add all your completed video files to the burner timeline.

For each video you add you will get one hotspot/link/thumbnail in the main menu.
I am assuming that you don’t need chapters.

Try using the Thumbnail Menu option from the gallery.
From the Edit Tab you can customise the menu page to include 8 thumbnails fitting your videos on one menu page. (VS 8/9 allowed 12)

From the Options Cogwheel lower left you access the Navigation Controls.
This sets how the dvd reacts to the menu.
Basically Continue to play All or Return to Menu.

2/
I use WMV files for the web
Start a new project-insert one of your completed video files.
Share-Share Video on Line
Select a quality-you may have to run a few tests to find the one that is suitable.
Save to your hard drive.
You get a link to a web site, I just close it.

Most computers have windows media installed, there should be no problems with your audience viewing.
Hope this Helps

Trevor,
Thanks, I did what you said but had a major problem...all of the thumbnails are black except one!

The videos I had compiled in Movie Wizard or whatever it's called and not the editor....they all have themes and all that....each one is "stand-alone".

Probably the first several frames are black color in the timeline I'm guessing...can I set the thumbnail to another frame in the movie? I couldn't see how to do that.

What I'd REALLY like to do is take a smartmenu that is designed for 3 movies per page and put 6 on that page...

Yes--Click the black thumbnail to select--see the popup box--change the frame using the slider or the clock, the default frame is the first frame which is black.

What I'd REALLY like to do is take a smartmenu that is designed for 3 movies per page and put 6 on that page...

Thanks again....argggg...so simple!

Now my only problem is "can I take a day off of work to do this and not get fired?" :)

Hi Bob

That depends on whether you are making the video for your boss.

Good luck
