mpeg1 codec

Post by agtata8 »

something's wrong with the mpeg1 codec that came with vs10+. My windows media palyer can't play it saying "specified module not found" and my mpeg splitter won't split the mpeg1 movies saying the same. vs10+ also seems to have overwritten my VS8 mpeg codec cos I am having the same prob vids created with VS8 now but before installing VS10+ I didn't have any such prob. Any help?

As far as I am aware, neither VS8 nor 10 install any mpeg-1 codec. They merely use the one installed by Windows XP. VS installs an mpeg-2 codec (and VS10+So also installs an mpeg-4 codec). So something has obviously corrupted or removed the mpeg-1 codec, but it is unlikely to have been VS. Have you by chance installed a codec mega pack? Those will often override existing codecs.

You might also want to do a Google search for a freeware program called GSpot or another called Sherlock. These will record all codecs on your computer and tell you if something is wrong with them e.g. corrupt or unregistered.

Either do a repair of XP (gulp) which should restore the mpeg-1 codec. Or yes, do a search for one. I would start at www.videohelp.com as that should provide some minimum assurance that the codec is OK...

repair was not an option unless I wated to buy another 300GB exterior drive to backup my files to. Besides I actually just bought sony vegas (i was gonna buy it anyways since it lets customize mpeg1 frame size unlike uvs) and what you know it's creating the mpeg1 for me without any problem.
