When I try to import .VOB files from my home movie DVD to ulead videostudio6 I get the error message
“unable to open file” “file format mismatch” 16803:1:3 .
Why can’t I import these files as they are common video files? I have tried copying them to the hard drive first...no change.

I've never used VS6, however I don't believe it recognizes the VOB format. VOB's do have MPEG2, however there is more content included with a VOB file.
Have you tried using ( I don't know if it was the same) Insert DVD/DVD-R, and just importing it that way?
You could also copy the Video_TS folder onto your harddrive, then try renaming the VOB files to MPEG2. This does not always work, but it might.
Then you could also try using a conversion program to convert the VOBs to MPEG-2.
