Problem burning DVD

Post by Grainne_C »

Hi everyone, I've had a search through the board but can't find anything to answer my question. hope someone here could please help me as I'm going out of my mind.

I bought my computer in November 2005, it runs microsoft xp and has been running like a dream.

The situation is: in January I bought the BelkinULead and VideoStudio6 (which came in the package). I used the programmes and had no problems.

Over the past week or so I've used the Ulead to link my VCR to my computer to transfer over some old videos. Everything has been going well and I've finalised about 7 DVDs so far. Then...

all of a sudden the VideoStudio will run through the processes as usual to finalise the project but...won't burn to the DVD...comes up with a message saying 'failed to record data to CD'. :( I've changed ABSOLUTELY NOTHING between successful project completion/burn and when it started malfunctioning.

So I went to another programme (myDVDplus) to try there. When it opened it gave me a message saying that the DMA was turned off. I went into my control panel, devices and checked and everything is reading 'enabled' and the report I ran says running smoothly.

Now my computer will let me burn CDs but not DVDs...I rolled the computer back, then I totally scrubbed the computer, downloaded updates from windows, reinstalled VideoStudio 6

can anyone give me a clue what am I doing wrong? why would VideoStudio be burning fine one day and, then me having not made any changes to the computer, it not be working the next day?

I should also mention that I regularly delete my files (so the 7 projects I completed have all been deleted from the computer so as to not tie up memory).

Just from that description I would probably be looking at the DVD burner rather than the software.
Do you have any Sonic software or Nero software installed? They both have DLA functions (Drive Letter Access) that allows you to drag and drop files to burn. The Sonic one (can't remember its name) can be disabled in the system tray but the Nero one (InCd) has to be uninstalled. Both of them have a tendency to take over the burner at start up and prevent access from other programs.
Also, have you changed media type/brand? The burner's software may not have a suitable write strategy for that media. Check the manufacturers website for firmware updates.
