How do you change the fade in/fade/out time of an overlay. I am trying to scroll a video clip from top to bottom over the main clip. the clip moves to slow. is there a way to have the overlay fade faster in and out . and adjust the time it stay on the main clip

Hi Teri,

Yes, there is an answer to your question. Click on your clip in the overlay track. Look over at your Options Panel, where the Edit and Attribute tabs are located and click on the Attribute tab. On the right half of the tab is the Direction/Style buttons - these allow you to choose from which direction the overlay clip enters the scene and exits the scene. The center button allows the overlay clip to remain stationary. Just below the Direction/Style Enter and Exit buttons are 4 more buttons, each of which has vertical bars in a progression of height. Two have rotational arrows on them. The buttons with the arrows are for rotating your overlay clip into and out of the scene. The other two butons (without the arrows) are for fading in and fading out the overlay clip into the scene. As far as controlling the speed at which they fade in/out and for controlling a pause time in between, look over at the preview window. Under the preview window, the horizontal jog slider shows a solid blue bar, with the black triangular shaped trim handles on both sides. Hover your mouse over the trim handles and it will tell you that this is the control for the Pause Duration. Just adjust the trim handles in or out to get the right entry/exit speeds and the right pause duration. The longer the blue bar, the faster the fade in/fade out will be and the longer the pause will be. Hope this helps.

:D :D

Bryan P.

I don't know if it helped Teri, but it was a big help for me. I had not run into this until earlier in the week. I just worked around it, now I can go back and fix it.

Is there a way to set the default length for the fade in and out durations?

Thanks,
Bruce Bennett

Hello TubaDad,

Unfortunately, there is no default for overlay fade in/fade out durations. There are only default durations for image/color clips, transitions and audio fade in/fade out. These three default durations can be adjusted in File|Preferences|Edit.

I am trying to adjust the speed with which an overlay clip enters. Lengthening or shortening the solid blue handles do control pause duration but, in my case, this seems to have no effect on speed of clip entry. Is there a separate control somewhere just for that?

Double click the overlay clip. The Pause Duration time line has two orange trim markers. Grab the left marker and drag it to the LEFT - the entry time will shorten. If you drag it full left the entry time is instantaneous.

Ditto for exit.

Hi Mark Lis

Can you tell us what type of clip you are using, images may react differently to text clips.

Can you create a test VSP use one of the standard library clips.
Add the effect you are trying to achieve
Now save the project as a vsp.
Locate the VSP on your hard drive and zip the file.
Attach that zipped vsp to your post, we should be able to open and relink to the library files.

You may be best to use Customise Motion, right click your clip for options
Once you get used to the panel the effects it can create are very good.

This web page may help, scroll down to view various types of editing.

Finally can you tell us which version of VS you are using, cheers.

This is the best answer. It worked for what I was trying to do. The "advanced" & "customized" motion section
seems to have nothing to do with "motion" per se; as it shows options for: position, opacity, shadow, border, mirror, size, rotation; the "ease in" ease out" does not do the trick for me. In any case, that particular advanced section is overkill for my purpose. Thanks, I got it now.
