Nature of the problem I am converting VHS videos to DVDs. have imported them into Mpeg video files onto the hard drive, and can open them in VS 10. However, whenever I try to save edited versions of the files, using either “ Save Trimmed Clip” from the ‘Clip’ menu, or “Create Video File” from the ‘Share’ menu, the output is always corrupted; while the audio sounds fine, the video almost immediately freezes, then jumps and immediately re-freezes, and so on. It has to be a VS10 problem, because I have been carrying out these procedures using the same hardware with VideoStudio V9 with no problems – and still can, using the same imported Mpeg files.
VS10 is also giving problems with files imported from DVDs – when I try to save any edits, I get an error message “ Failed to open the Mpeg Encoder (2000:1:1). Again. I can edit the same files without any problem in VS 9.
Currently, I have had to abandon using VS10 and return to VS 9 – emails to Ulead Tech support have gone unanswered, so any ideas would be very welcome
Properties of your source files
I'm using various files, mostly Mpeg 2 720x576 4:3 25 FPS. File sizes around 3-5Gb
What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
Imported from VHS recorder using Tevion USB 2800D
Imported from DVD using VS9 or 10 import facility
Project Settings PAL DVD 4:3 Mpeg 720x576 25 FPS, LPCM audio
Output format Mpeg File -PAL
Error Codes For files imported from VHS video – none. For fFiles extracted from DVD – Error code 2000:1:1

If you have 'Smart Render' enabled during your Render, uncheck the box and render the file again using the 'same as project properties' setting. It sounds like you have corrupt MPEG2 files, and using Smart Render makes the corruption worse. I've found that MPEG2 files that are corrupt files will render perfectly well if SR is disabled.

Interesting! I'm hoping that the MPEG problems will be solved and the support will improve with the Corel takeover. But, any changes are probably several months away...It has to be a VS10 problem, because I have been carrying out these procedures using the same hardware with VideoStudio V9 with no problems – and still can, using the same imported Mpeg files.... I gave up on MPEG editing with Ulead VS8. I bought a special-purprose MPEG editor, and I haven't actually tried MPEGs with VS9 or VS10, since lots of users still report problems here. I didn't have problems with every project, and "lip-sync" problems were much more common than crashes. But, both were the results of edited MPEGs.
I know some users (like TDK) never have these problems. Maybe most users never have these problems. But, most of the reports of "lip sync" problems are from people editing MPEGs.
That's an intersting hypothesis. It might explain why these problems sometimes crop-up and sometimes they don't. In any case, I never had any trouble with un-edited MPEGs. The editing process is either causing the corruption or making it worse. (But, in my case, turning off smart render didn't solve the all of the problems.)It sounds like you have corrupt MPEG2 files, and using Smart Render makes the corruption worse.
I think you are right. I believe the corruption is "fixed" when the file is re-rendered, but sometimes it screws-up the A/V sync in the process...I've found that MPEG2 files that are corrupt files will render perfectly well if SR is disabled.

I agree with you, DVDDoug, but I've found that I only ever get lip sync errors with SR enabled. I did an experiment a while back where I captured a specific duration of footage as an MPEG2 file. I then added some transitions and rendered the project twice using the 'same as project properties' setting. With SR enabled the file was unstable and out of sync from start to finish. The file with no SR enabled was stable and frame perfect.

Not always. It depends on how you are capturing. If you are capturing an analog source with a capture device it is usually upper field first.alan.glaister wrote:What are your capture settings?
If you are capturing from any video device or video source such as VHS, DV camcorder or even DVD then you should select Lower Field First in your capture settings in preferences.
Now using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop

Mach2,
VS10 has a different system of default properties. Are you setting up the detailed video properties in SHARE/Create Video file using the Custom button, as recommended in http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27
As for the Save Trimmed Video operation, I believe that 10+ uses the Project Property settings in the File menu. Are they set up to match the properties of the captured video?
