Can't get VS 10 to recognize my camcorder...

Post by jdiamond »

OK, I know this sounds like one of those insanely basic questions, but I've already read similar posts on this newsgroup and nothing has helped. My camera had been working fine using other DV capture software. Here's my information - maybe you can help me:

I'm using a Canon Elura digicam. My movies are in progressive scan mode, but I have the capture setting to full field so I hope VS can handle progressive scan.

I have it hooked up to my TI OHCI complient 1394 card. In my settings, the card is working perfectly. The camera recognizes it's been plugged in and goes into "DV IN" mode under play awaiting commands. (Which again had worked previously.)

I'm running windows XP with ample resources.

Now when I launch VS10 (which takes forever to start up), everything just remains grayed out with no source selected. When I try to select any of the 3 main sources (like the TI option), it cannot see it. When I try to select or scan for any external device, it just starts capturing my screen, continually, as if it's mocking me. I keep turning that off, but it continues to capture the screen.

Guys, I feel really hopeless here, and VS10 comes with no help. Anything you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Just to add more detail if it helps... I'm runnning XP service pack 2. The graphics card is a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis. The ASUS board is either a K8N deluxe or KVN deluxe - I can't remember exactly.

But again, this is all about step I - my camera recognizes the computer but VS 10 is unaware there's any device out there at all.

In your capture settings, which device control do you have selected (defaults don't work always, in MSP the default is "None"). I always use the MS one even though my IEEE1394 card is TI compliant  .

Which capture plugin have you selected?

Yes - default was set to none. I tried all three choices, and each time it said it couldn't find any device.

I got it working! I was constantly reading all the other threads, and one suggested looking for the camera in the device manager. The camera did appear there, but then I launched VS10. The key being that since I booted Windows, I had not yet launched VS10 during a time that the camera was not hooked up. Then when I launched it, it finally recognized the camera.

So the key for me was boot, camera, then VS10. Or if I launch VS10 when I'm not editing, reboot before trying to edit.

This is my first time with VS10 (I was an Edit DV Pro user), and I'm trying to get used to the more clunky interface - it seems to only capture 640x480P, blacking out the sides of the 720x480 frame. It's also annoying that you set up your capture shot, press capture, and then it starts playing whie you have to hit OK to capture. (No possibility of capturing from a pause point.) It also doesn't seem to detect scene transitions accurately.

Well, I sound like I'm complaining, but I'll get used to it, after all, Edit DV was a $600 program and this is a $100 program, so I have to keep everything in perspective.

Thanks for your help, folks. :)
