DV AVI File Properties

Post by blplhp »

This may be a dumb question, and I probably know what the answer is going to be, but I want to make sure anyway. Here goes:

When I capture video from my DV camcorder, and VS10+ loads the thumbnail AVI files into my Library, and then I right click on a particular AVI file thumbnail and then click on the "Properties" drop down menu item, I get a Properties dialog box of the AVI file. Is all of the information in that Properties dialog box associated with that AVI file just captured from the original property information of the actual recording made by the DV camcorder, and not anything that has been changed when captured into VS10+? In other words, the Properties dialog box says that my DV camcorder AVI file just captured has a frame size of 720 x 480. Is this the actual frame size originally recorded by my DV camcorder, or is this the frame size that VS10+ has captured and changed to match any internal capturing properties?

I'm assuming that all the property information shown in this dialog box are the actual recording properties produced by my DV camcorder. Am I correct?

:?:
Cheers,

Bryan P.

Yes. The original, unaltered, DV "data" gets embedded into an AVI "container" file.

In fact, I like to call it "transfer", rather than "capture". I use the word "capture" for real-time capture. If you don't capture a broadcast, or an analog tape playback, you've missed it...

Hi

As Doug said the video data is ‘transferred’ to the PC. (I think that word describes it very well)

Whilst your camera is connected, with the format as DV.
If you select the ‘options ‘cogwheel you should select DV-Type 1 as the option.

Notice that there is no other properties to set. The video is transferred from the camera.
What you have in the camera is what you get on the PC. (DV-Avi at 13 Gb per hour)

If you select any other format (dvd-Mpeg-wmv etc) then you can set the capture properties. Get these wrong and you will have problems. The process re-codes the data/video during capture.
