Video is wide screen and I can't figure out why

Post by rpavich123 »

Hi,
I just captured my 3rd video clips from my DV cam and this time they came in wide screen??!!

I didn't do anyting different; I followed the "capture" directions given on this site except this is the first time I captured to AVI instead of MPEG....

any quick ideas?

Plenty, which one do you want to hear first?

Now, relax, get yourself a coffee or tea or whatever else tickles your fancy, forget about the fact that it is you who has this problem and read your post again  Not much to go on, is there.

Have a read of this and come back with the proper information http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=8959

Heinz,
I was just asking like that because I was at work without access to my PC with the video on it and I thought there might be a "just click this checkbox" kind of answer before I completely dove into it...having said that...yes, there was that kind of answer; I used the search function as your link suggested

I am using VS10. If you go to File > Project Properties
... it says Project template properties ... Edit file format:
On the drop down menu, it has options to select MPEG files or AVI files...
I notice when I select AVI files - my preview screen shows the black reveal bars.
When I select MPEG files, the black bars are gone.

Hi

How are you connecting your camera.
Firewire, composite, etc

Select DV as the Capture Format, does it remain as DV or revert to Avi.

Any other option other than DV requires you to set the capture properties and the aspect ratio(normal default 4:3)

If DV then the capture process is copying/transferring the footage.
This is the best method, what you have is what you get.
The only ‘option’ being DV-Type 1.

If any other format.
Select the Options Cogwheel to access the Video Capture Properties.
Here you can modify the settings.

The project properties are usually changed by VS to match the first video clip inserted to the timeline.
If your capture was DV 16:9 then the project would most likely change to the same.

Right click a clip in the timeline to see the clip properties.
These reflect the capture settings.

Trevor,
Thanks, I captured in AVI format...this was the first time I've done that...
I'm connecting thru firewire

It seems like the bars are there only on the PC....not on the finished rendered file....

You say captured Avi

Just to clarify

Was the Capture Format DV. :?:
If so then the capture should be ok.

Right click a file/clip in the timeline and select properties.

Read a look at widescreen 16:9
