Corrupt Video Capture Issues HELP please

Post by skating101 »

First my specs:

Athlon64 3500
200gb ide and 40gb ide hdd
512 ram
fx5200 gfx card
camera: Canon Elura 100

I have used both windows movie maker and ulead videostudio 8 to capture video (as dv) and the video that is captured is always corrupt no matter which part of the dv tape i capture.

In windows movie maker it does save the file but then when it trys to import it it says that the file is corrupt and cannot be imported and then windows explorer crashes. In ulead videostudio when i try to capture the video i press start capture and then stop but when i stop capture the program says "Capturing failed. File created is corrupt and unusable. File will be automatically deleted"

Any advice would be much appreciated thanks

How do you connect the camera?

Which settings do you use in the capture module?

connected using firewire and an almost brand new cable. The settings i was using were just the defaults with capturing as dv

I can't speak for Movie Maker, but 'just the defaults for DV' in VS can often be the 'wrong' -- or inappropriate -- Encoder Type. For some time, and in fact since at least VS8, I have noticed that on installation, my versions of VS have set Type 2 Encoder as the default on installation. I don't know if this is only me or others have the same experience. You can check on the Capture page by clicking on the Options icon. If it is set to Type 2, then change it to Type 1. Mind you, trying to capture to Type 2 if your computer is not up to it does not normally give corrupt video, only unusable video (jerky video and or audio)...

But since you get the same result in Movie Maker, I suspect that there is some hardware fault -- either in your Firewire capture card or cable, or in the camera... Does the computer and VS actually 'see' the camera? In the Capture page, do you get something like 'Canon MSDV' in the device section? And does it automatically set DV as the format?

Yup in the device manager i can see the Canon MiniDV Camera under imaging devices. And also the preview in Videostudio is perfect as well it just wont capture it

and also if this problem only occurs when i capture as dv in windows movie maker, if i capture as .wmv then it captures fine

Did you ever install any of those dreadful "codec packs" that install a bunch of often conflicting and/or buggy codecs on your system? That may be the cause of your problem.

One thing you can try is to re-register the Microsoft DV codec -- simply type the following into a command prompt window or the Start -> Run dialog:

regsvr32 qdv.dll

yes i did install the codec packs, i re-registered the dv codec but the problem still remains. Is there anyway to remove the codec packs and start from scratch?

... any suggestions? is the codecs a likely cause?
